Female Reproductive Notes

Ovary(2) = stores the egg cells

1 egg is released every month (alternate right/left ovary’s)

All eggs are present at female’s birth

Estrogen = female sex hormone produced by the ovaries

Progesterone = hormone that causes the endometrium to thicken in preparation for the egg cell.

Egg, Ovum, Ova = female reproductive cell

Fertilization = male sperm and female ova unite

Ovulation = the release of an egg cell once a month

Menstruation = the loss of the endometrium and disintegrated egg cell

Menopause = when the ovaries stop releasing egg cells

Fallopian Tube(2) = carries the ova to the uterus

Fertilization takes place in the fallopian tube

Uterus = lined with the endometrium, where the fertilized egg will implant and start growing.

Endometrium = the lining of the uterus

Made up of small blood vessels which fill with blood in preparation for the fertilized egg.

Provides a source of nutrition for the fertilized ova.

Leaves the body during menstruation

Vagina = muscular tube that connects the uterus to the outside of the body

Birth canal = another name for the vagina

Cervix =dilates 10cm so baby can pass from the uterus into the birth canal/vagina.

Labia Minora = two small folds of skin that cover the vaginal and urethral openings

Labia Major = two large folds of skin that cover the labia minora.

Male Reproductive System Notes

Scrotum = external sac that holds the testes (testicle)

Testicle/Testes = produces the male sex hormone

Seminiferus Tubules = tubes where the sperm are produced

Sperm = male reproductive cell

Testosterone = male sex hormone

Epididymus = Comma shaped structure on the backside of the testes. Sperm will mature here.

Vas Deferens = a tube that the sperm will pass through moving from the epididymis to the urethra.

Ejaculatory Duct = the tube that leads from the prostate gland to the urethra.

Cowper’s Gland(2) = secretes a fluid that prepares the urethra for the passage of the sperm.

Prostate Gland = secretes a fluid that provides nourishment for the sperm

Seminal Vesicles(2) = secretes a fluid that enables the sperm to move through the reproductive systems.

***cowper’s gland, prostate gland and seminal vesicles create the fluid known as SEMEN

Semen = mixture of fluid and sperm

Penis = composed of soft spongy tissue that has many blood vessels. Contains the urethra

Foreskin = fold of skin that covers the urethral opening

Circumcision = removal of the foreskin (surgery) done during the first days of life.
