<h2 Tough choices. Devastating consequences.

Imagine that you had just enough money to buy food for the week, with nothing left over to pay your utility bills or to purchase bus fare to get to work. What would you do? Many people who struggle with hunger face these tough choices every day. The decisions they make can have serious and lasting consequences.

<h2>Compromises and coping strategies

The median annual income for households served by the Feeding America network is $9,175. In our 2014 Hunger in America study, the people we serve told us about the choices they face due to limited resources:

They also told us about the many ways they stretch their food budget or work to supplement it:

<h2>The impact of hunger on health

Hunger and health are deeply connected. People who are food insecure are disproportionally affected by diet-sensitive chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and according to research, food insecurity is also linked to many adverse effects to overall health. Learn more about the intersection of nutrition, hunger and health. <link to http://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/impact-of-hunger/hunger-and-nutrition-in-america

<h3>Hunger and child development

For children, food insecurity is particularly devastating. Proper nutrition is critical to a child’s development. Not having enough of the right kinds of food can have serious implications for a child’s physical and mental health, academic achievement and future economic prosperity. Research shows an association between food insecurity and delayed development in young children; risk of chronic illnesses like asthma and anemia; and behavioral problems like hyperactivity, anxiety and aggression in school-age children.

<h3> First name, Town, State <modal window with story or video and description>

Introduce the main characters in the story and lead with a bit of insight into why they are facing hunger. Use this as an opportunity to build empathy for the clients featured in the story or make their situation relatable. Then, give a nod to how a Feeding America network food bank has helped them. The aim of these mini descriptions is to have site visitors see the range of people helped and the various reasons their fellow Americans face hunger, even if they don’t watch a single video or read a detailed story.

Pull quote: Use a direct quote from text or video that reflects the client’s feeling about hunger (whether surprise at needing help or gratitude for FA support or an awareness of the issues and desire to give back.) Try to vary the topics of the quotes so they don’t all sound too similar.

Example: Deb and her husband began raising their four granddaughters after her son passed away. They weren’t financially prepared to raise children in their senior years, but Feeding America has helped them keep food on the table.

“My family might not always need help, but I’m sure there will be someone else here who will.”

<h1>Our Approach

<h2> Food. Hope. Stability.

When families struggle to get enough to eat, they are often struggling to meet other basic needs as well—including housing, employment healthcare and more. Feeding America helps provide meals to people in need through a network of food banks and helps address root causes of food insecurity.

<h3> Food recovery: saving good food from going to waste

In America, we have enough food to feed every man, woman and child, yet 70 billion pounds of safe, edible food goes to waste each year. In fact, an estimated 25 – 40 percent of food grown, processed and transported in the U.S. will never be consumed. And, more food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material in municipal solid waste.

We work with manufacturers, distributors, retailers, food service companies, and farmers to gather food before it goes to waste. Learn how we help prevent food waste <link to http://www.feedingamerica.org/our-work/our-approach/reduce-food-waste>

<h3> Foods that nourish: healthful, high in protein and nutrient rich

The long-term effects of hunger and poor nutrition can be devastating. That’s why it’s not enough to provide families with food. They need a healthy variety of foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein. Every year, we do more to secure these foods for our nationwide network of food banks. Learn more about the variety of healthy foods we provide to food banks <link to http://www.feedingamerica.org/our-work/our-approach/meet-nutritional-needs>

<h3> Food safety: ensuring families receive good, safe food

In the past food banks and food pantries often focused on storing non-perishable items like canned and packaged goods. As we work to make sure hungry Americans get a wider variety of healthy foods they need, we also work to keep these foods – including highly perishable items like fresh produce and lean protein – safe. Learn what we do to ensure food safety <link to http://www.feedingamerica.org/our-work/our-approach/ensure-food-safety>
