Is Your Flag Made in the USA?

Flag Manufacturers Ensure that Flags are Made Here at Home

(Wayne, PA, May 12, 2010) . . . How would you feel if you discovered that the flag you display at your home, or the flag you are waving at a parade, was made in another country? The Flag Manufacturers Association of America (FMAA) is working to ensure that the American flags that you purchase are made here in the United States with pride by encouraging all Americans to look for the FMAA Certification Seal.

Of particular concern to the FMAA are the stick flags so often handed out at patriotic parades and displayed in cemeteries. Many of these flags, which are readily available at retail stores across the country, are imported from other countries. Organizations purchase them in quantity to hand out at parades and celebrations, or during memorial services, with little thought as to where they were manufactured. FMAA is working to educate people regarding this issue.

FMAA launched its “Certified Made in the USA” certification program in 2005. It is designed to ensure that all American flags bearing this Certification Seal are made here at home in the United State of materials that are domestic in origin and that all processes involved in its manufacture were completed in United States facilities with United States labor. The FMAA monitors and requires re-certification from its member manufacturers every year.

United States law requires that every flag be labeled with its country of origin. Those designated as “Made in USA” may be true to their name, but only those bearing the FMAA Certification Seal are guaranteed to adhere to the standards and continued compliance as monitored by a professional association and its domestic members. Look for the FMAA Certification Seal on any flag that you are about to purchase to be sure it is truly an American made flag and a true symbol of patriotism.

What can you do? Always be sure the FMAA “Certified Made in the USA” Certification Seal is on every flag you buy. Ask your retailer where their flags were manufactured and talk to them about this issue. Share this information with family, friends, business associates, and any organizations in which you may be involved.

The Flag Manufacturers Association of America is a non-profit trade association, established in 2003, representing the leading United States flag manufacturers dedicated to educating and promoting the quality, variety, and proper use of flags manufactured in the United States.
