Audience:
Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants licensed in Tennessee.
Course Descriptions:
Jurisprudence – The Legal Basis of Physical Therapy Practice -This course covers legal issues in physical therapy and the Tennessee Practice Act and Rules Governing the Practicing of Physical Therapy.
Ethics in Physical Therapy Practice – Principles of ethical decision-making, the APTA Code of Ethics, and the Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant are covered in this course.
Course Objectives:
Jurisprudence – The Legal Basis of Physical Therapy Practice:
- Describe the purpose of the Practice Act and Rules
- Recognize the types of disciplinary action that may be taken against a licensee
- Describe offenses that may lead to disciplinary action
- Explain the rules of supervision for PTAs and other personnel
- Describe the Practice Act and Rules related to the definition & scope of practice, disclosures, & administrative requirements
- Recognize that there are legal issues and obligations in addition to the Practice Act and Rules that affect physical therapy practice
Ethics in Physical Therapy Practice:
- Recognize the difference between personal and professional values
- Define common bioethical terminology
- Use the Code of Ethics and Guides to Conduct as tools for decision making
- Demonstrate through case analysis the ability to identify ethical conflicts and support a resolution to an ethical dilemma
Speakers:
Nancy Fell, PT, PhD, NCS is an UC Foundation Associate Professor in the Physical Therapy Department at UTC. With clinical expertise in acute care and adult neurology, she teaches related courses and practices at SiskinHospital. Dr. Fell is actively involved in the APTA's Neurology Section and has taught the TPTA Ethics and Jurisprudence course since its inception.
Debbie Ingram, PT, EdD, FAPTA is the Director of Clinical Education and Interim Department Head in the Physical Therapy Department at UTC. She formerly served as chairman of the Tennessee Board of Occupational and Physical Therapy Examiners and Vice President of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy.

- Registration forms postmarked or faxed after this date must add $25 to the registration amount due.
- On-site registrants must pay $25 more than the prices quoted in the early bird registration.

The Courses are 2 hours in length. You must attend the entire 2 hours to receive the course certificate.
