CourseDescription

Thiscourseisdesignedtoconcentrateonvariousaspectsofintermediatemoderndance.Theseincluderhythm,bodyisolations,somaticpractices,moderndancehistoryandvocabulary. Anatomicalandkinesiologicalprinciplesthatpertaintoclasscontentwillalsobepresented,inordertoencouragethestudenttoperformthemovementthoughtfullyandcorrectly. Studentswillmasterbasicmodernsteps,gainagreaterunderstandingofmusicality,developcreativepractices,createandperformself-choreographyandanalyzedance.

CourseStructure

Thisclasswillconsistofwarm-up,centerfloorworkandtravelingthroughspace;observingdance;learningterminologyandtheory;writingresponses to dance videos and liveprofessionaldanceperformances;whenpossible,participatinginmaster classes; andperformingmovementevaluations.Studentsarerequiredtotraveltoandattendliveprofessionaldanceperformancesandtoperform.

Studentsmustprovide1writtendancecritique(2pages)oneweekafterattendingaprofessionaldanceperformancenolaterthanDecember7th.Aprogramandticketstubfromtheperformanceisalsorequired.MorethoroughguidelinesforthecritiquewillbediscussedpriortotheconcertviewingandbefoundinPaperRequirements. Note:Studentswhodonotattendaliveprofessionaldanceperformancemustviewtwo(2)professionaldancevideosperliveprofessionaldanceperformancemissedforamaximumof80% credit.

AllstudentsinthedanceprogramintheDepartmentofTheatreandDancemustattend three(3)liveprofessionaldanceperformances1ofwhichmustbetheDancesWeDance:CelebratingtheHolidaysintheFAUUniversityTheatre.(See attendingashowthatisnotlistedtheymustemailtheinstructoralinkforapproval.Thenon-listedshowmustbeapprovedbytheinstructorpriortoviewingforcredit.

Midterm/Final Exams:

Boththemid-termandfinalexamwillconsistofgroupchoreography,solochoreography,choreographygivenbytheinstructor,andaself-assessmentpaper.

WellnessAttire:Thefacultysuggeststhatstudentwearattirethatfacilitatesviewingof alignment,articulationofthebodyinspace,andmovementinitiation.Anyclothingthathidesthestudent’sphysicalappearancewillcompromisesuccessfulevaluation.Hairback offthefaceinsomefashionistoone’sadvantage.Jewelryisnotrecommended.Noshoes arerequiredforthisclassandsocksarenotrecommended.Gentlemenarerequiredto wearadancebelt.Thestudentwillbedismissedfromclassiftheyattempttodancewith streetclothing.

FAUDepartmentofTheatreAttendancePolicy: Absences:Thenumberofabsencesastudentispermittedduringasemesteristwoabsencesthatareexcused.Nopenaltytothestudent’sgradewillbeincurredfortheseexcusedabsences.Ifastudentexceedsthenumberofpermissibleabsences,thenthestudent’sfinalgradewillbeloweredforeachadditionalabsencealettergradeaccordingtotheplus/minusscale.Thus,anA+woulddroptoB+andsoon.Ifthestudentmissesfive(5)ormoreabsencetheywillautomaticallyfailthe
