FAQs for the Applications of Higher Degrees

Can I apply for funding for a higher degree?

  • Yes but there are some caveats – how long you have been in service and how many people in your department are already studying. If you are a new staff member in receipt of SDNS hours or still on probation you will need to wait until these have finished. If there are a number of people in your department already studying you should discuss this with your HOD.

When can I apply for funding for a higher degree?

  • You should think about making your application in line with workloading and appraisals. Decisions are made through the workloading process in June and this is the only opportunity on an annual basis to make an application for workload or for funding.

Is my funding annual or for the life span of the degree?

  • FEHW have an intention to support someone throughout their course, as long as they make progress, but you will need to apply for your funding on an annual basis.

How do I apply to start a new degree?

  • Consult with the information found on WOLF
  • Discuss with your line manager and complete the forms as part of the workload process. The Higher Degree Application Process will outline the steps that are taken.

What other forms will I need to complete?

  • You will need to (see the Higher Degree Application Process):
  • Complete a form to apply for the funding
  • An application form for the degree (these are found on our University web site: an EOI form for a PhD and an application form for the Professional Doctorates)
  • An entry into workload under SRA

Will I need to demonstrate progress each year?

  • Yes. If you are studying internally we will undertake these checks for you – through APR, a review of the boards and satisfactory progress throughout the year as evidenced by supervisory meeting notes on evision. If you are studying externally you will need to provide some evidence to your line manager as part of appraisal – this could be an email from your tutor/supervisor, transcript or a letter.

Will I need to provide evidence that my fees are being paid?

  • If you are studying internally (and you have gone through the process) we will communicate with registry for you. If you are studying externally you will be provided with a letter of sponsorship to take to your university.

Who do I speak to if there is a problem with the funding once it is agreed?

  • Email your issue to FEWH Finance, FEHW Research and Kay Biscomb
