Family Public Service Announcement

Honor Code Level 2

The task: You and your group will be creating a sociologically based PSA regarding marriage, divorce and/or family. The intended audience for this PSA will be the general public, so it should be accessible and appropriate to be shared with all audiences.

Individually: Before getting together with your group please complete the following:

  1. Read your article. These are your copies so you may write/underline/highlight all over them if you would like.
  2. Identify the argument/finding of your article. You should be able to sum this up in one or two sentences. Please find a place on your reading to make note of this argument summary.

You will then get together with your group to create your Public Service Announcement. Please prepare an announcement that meets the following requirements:

The Logistics: Your PSA will need to include the following:

  • A direct quotation from your assigned article to give your PSA legitimacy. For example, you will want to include that “studies have shown” or “in a recent study” to give your message merit.
  • Clear simple advice for your listeners. You should only include one or two simple pieces of advice or information and they should be presented in simple and accessible language.
  • A slogan or catch phrase will help make a lasting impression on your audience. Think of the TV ads that use the phrase, “The more you know…”
  • Your PSA will include two parts
  • A poster (on the large computer paper) that could be mass produced and distributed to your audience.
  • A short “commercial” to be shared with the class. This should be 30 seconds to one minute in length and can star one or more of your group members.
