Family Law Solicitor (re-advertised)
The Position
A unique opportunity exists within our centre for an experienced family law solicitor to develop an innovative, specialist domestic violence service for women in the Rockingham region with support from SCALES’ experienced staff.
- Lead a small professional team to provide wrap-around legal and non-legal services.
- The position is full time but we will consider part time for the right applicant.

The team will comprise a solicitor, client advocate and admin support.
This new service is funded by the Commonwealth Government as part of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022.
The purpose of the funding is to deliver wrap-around services to women experiencing or at risk of domestic violence in the Rockingham region. The focus of the service is on providing intensive, trauma informed, legal and non-legal assistance and will target the most vulnerable and at risk women.
The successful applicant will have at least 2 to 3 years’ experience in family law.
About SCALES
SCALES is a not for profit community legal centre based in Rockingham providing a range of free legal services to the community.
SCALES aims to:
- Work in partnership with others to provide access to justice through holistic legal services including individual assistance, community education and systemic advocacy.
- Provide opportunities for clinical legal education programs that develop the skills and ethical practice of law students within a human rights framework.
Key responsibilities
- All aspects of legal service delivery including representation, casework and advice
- Building and maintaining relationships with other legal and non-legal service providers
- Supervision of staff, including junior solicitors and advocates
- The development and implementation of community legal education programs relevant to women experiencing domestic violence
Essential requirements of this position
- Holds, or is eligible to hold, a current practising certificate in WA
- Demonstrated experience in providing high quality legal advice and casework services in the area of family law (parenting and financial)
- A strong commitment to social justice principles
- An understanding of the needs of women experiencing domestic violence
- The capacity to work effectively, independently and collaboratively
- Well-developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- High level of skill in legal research and analysis with a particular focus on problem solving
- Sound computer skills and ability to prepare reports, court documents, and letters
Desirable
- Demonstrated knowledge or experience working with women experiencing domestic violence
- An understanding of and commitment to the work of community legal centres
- Experience in dealing with clients from diverse backgrounds
Remuneration and benefits
This role is a full time position (37.5 hours per week), however we will consider reduced hours for the right person.
The position is an 18 month contract with a 3 month probation. There may be longer term opportunities subject to funding. Conditions under the SCHADS Industry Award (MA 000100).
