Introduction – For Parents

Why This Guide?

This guide was developed with ENTER CITY kids and families in mind.

Children today are not active enough. Being inactive can lead to serious health problems that used to show up only in adults such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Children should be active for 60 minutes every day — and they should have fun doing it! This guide contains lots of fun things kids can do in and aroundENTER CITY to be active. So turn off your TV, dump the controller, choose something out of this book and…

Play hard inENTER CITY. You’ll be glad you did!

Children’s Eating and Physical Activity Habits Are Not What They Should Be:

-The percentage of children and adolescents who are overweight has more than doubled in the past 30 years with most of the increase since the late 1970s.

-Over one-half of the children at the highest weight percentiles will persist in being heavy into adulthood.

-Between 1977 and 1995 the number of walking and bicycling trips made by children ages 5-15 dropped by 40 percent.

-Children ages 2-18 spend an average of four hours a day watching television, DVDs or videotapes, playing video games or using a computer.

Link Physical Activity with Books

There is a natural link between reading, nutrition, and physical activity. Kids love to read stories about things that are connected to their own daily lives such as playing sports, being active, and family mealtime.

Each activity in this book has a Book Link that goes with it. You can find many of these books at school and at the local library. If you read the Book Link book, to or with your child before, after (or sometimes while) doing the activity you will help to teach him or her that being physically active is healthy—and fun!

Great Places to Read and Play

In ENTER CITY, there are lots of places you can play with your child, then sit down and read a good book. So grab your child’s favorite book, pack some water and a healthy snack, and visit these great places inENTER CITY where you can read and play.

Get Busy Reading!!!

Research shows that children who read in their free time are better readers, so…start encouraging your child to read today!

  • Pick a place to read. Set up a reading corner in your house where your child can read, a place that’s not too busy or noisy. Make it comfortable by adding a reading light and a comfortable chair or some pillows.
  • Stop the interruptions! Find time to read to or with your child every day. Turn off the pagers and cell phones. Don’t answer the door or phone. Your child will appreciate the attention and know that he or she is special to you.
  • Be a reading role model. Let your child see you reading a book or magazine. Talk about how you use reading in your job throughout the day.

Make Reading Part of Your Active Lifestyle

Fun Literacy Games to Play on the Go

Outdoor ABC: Say a letter. The first person to name five things to do outside beginning with that letter gets to pick the next letter.

Groovy Letters: Try to shape your body like letters in the alphabet and have players guess the letters. Spell out a word. The first one to guess the word gets to go next.

Moving Rhymes: Hop, stop, pop—these words all rhyme! Make a game of rhyming activity words and then do the activity. Whoever goes first picks a word and everyone does the activity. The next person chooses a word that rhymes and everyone does that activity, and on it goes!
