Mission Statement: The Family and Consumer Science department provides exceptional comprehensive programs that enable individuals and families across the life span to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse society. The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences education is to prepare students for family life by providing opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed for:

  • Strengthening the well being of individuals and families across the life span.
  • Becoming responsible citizens and leaders in family, community and work settings.
  • Promoting optimal nutrition and wellness across the life span.
  • Managing resources to meet the material needs of individuals and families.
  • Balancing personal, home, family and work lives.
  • Using critical, creative thinking and 21st Century skills to address problems in diverse family, community and work environments.
  • Functioning effectively as providers and consumers of goods and services.
  • Appreciating human worth and accepting responsibility for one's actions and success in family and work life.

The Family and Consumer Science program will be incorporating the following 21st Century Skills as part of the curriculum:

Family and Consumer Science Classroom Expectations:

1.Mutual respect and cooperation are expected from all students when working individually or in

a group setting.

2.Students should be on time and prepared for class with the following items:

  • Assignment Book
  • Pen or Pencil
  • PatriotPass
  • Independent reading book
  • Section of their binder for handouts

3. Participate actively and appropriately.

4. Listen and follow directions.

5. Be polite and respectful of others.

6. Use equipment safely and appropriately.

7. Complete all assignments and submit on time for full credit.

8. Strive to do your best.

Your child will spend 20 classes with Mrs. Bartlett covering the following topics:

“Going Green”

  • How to reduce waste and toxins in their lives
  • Recycling
  • Buying “green” friendly products
  • Conserving energy and resources

Child Development:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a babysitter
  • Ages and stages of development
  • Child safety issues
  • Age appropriate foods, books, toys and activities

Clothing and Textiles:

  • Measuring techniques
  • Proper use of sewing tools
  • Machine parts and safety
  • “Green” friendly project

Grading Criteria:

  • Planning & Participation 20%
  • Activities 20%
  • Tests 30%
  • Projects 30%

Your child will spend 20 classes with Mrs. Carey covering the following topics:

Nutrition and Wellness:

  • MyPyramid
  • Nutrients in food
  • Analyze food diary
  • Create a healthy menu
  • Science in the kitchen(leavening agents)
  • Microwave cooking
  • Foods Labs based on MyPyramid

Grading Criteria:

  • Participation 20%
