SPANISH I

Fall Semester 2017

GOALS:

This class was designed to help students learn Spanish using grammar as a foundation combining explicit and implicit explanation of it.

This course will not be exhaustive of all that there is for Basic Spanish, but rather will be a great introduction and solid foundation that works as a platform to continue building upon.

The vocabulary and content was carefully selected so that students don’t just collect words but actually understand and create correct structured sentences.

By the end of the class, students should be able to understand, read, write and speak basic Spanish in the present tense.

MATERIALS:

We will be using my book: Basic Spanish I but students can bring their pencils, erasers and highlighters. A folder for additional pages would be helpful as well.

Access to internet would be helpful but not obligatory; I will be sharing a variety of helpful links.

ATTENDANCE:

Missing a class will mean missing a lot of content; each student is responsible to contact me to get their pages and links so that they can make up all work by the following week.

HOMEWORK

Depending on each student, homework could take between 1 hour OR 3 hours a week. Some factors that may affect this are:

* If students have never had any Spanish before, they will have a lot more vocabulary to learn compared to those that may just be refreshing their numbers, colors, etc.

* Another factor would be the ability to memorize. Students will practice during the class but it is unavoidable that learning any new language will require memorization. Some students memorize easier and faster than others.

* There will be some worksheet pages that may include some reading and writing. I have kept those pretty short and easy.

QUIZZES:

Students will have short quizzes to evaluate what they studied during that specific week. These quizzes will help see the areas that students need to reinforce but they will also help train the students for their final test.

Quizzes will be graded individually, with 100% being a perfect score. At the end of the semester, the scores of all quizzes will be averaged, and the resultant average will count for 10% of the final grade.

WRITTEN PROJECT:

By the end of the semester the students will have an opportunity to practice their writing using the vocabulary and tools they have learned. They can choose one of these options:

* Translation of a page from English to Spanish

* Write a description of a picture

* Write 30 complete PERFECT sentences.

VERBAL PROJECT:

By the end of the semester the students will have an opportunity to practice their verbal skills using the vocabulary and tools they have learned. They will have between 5 & 6 minutes to either:

*Describe a picture

*Answer direct questions.
