Week 2 (August 26-30): Start Native American Unit. Read Native American Myths (Turtle, Grizzlies, and Navajo) and discuss origin story characteristics. Grammar/Commas. Discuss Narrative Story Characteristics. Discuss origin story writing assignment. Final draft due: Where do you see yourself in seven years?
Week 3 (September 3-6): Native American Poetry. “Coyote and the Buffalo”. Grammar workshops. Origin story planning guide. Short story: Sherman Alexei
Week 4 (September 9-13): “Smoke Signals” and contemporary Native American short stories. Essay planning workshop/peer edit. Unit Test review. Unit Test
Week 5: (September 16-20): Final essays due. “Age of Faith” Intro to Puritan. Bradstreet/Taylor Poetry. Poetic Terms. “Sinners in the Hands”
Week 6 (September 23-27): Large quiz on “Age of Faith”. Begin The Crucible . Introduce Autobiographical essay: What makes you an American?
Week 7 (September 30-4): First third of The Crucible. Quiz on beginning part. Introduce large project.
Week 8: (October 7-11): Second third of The Crucible. Chapter reading quizzes. Students work on project.
Week 9 (October 14-18): Last third of The Crucible. Watch movie. Chapter reading quizzes. Project due.
Week 10 (October 21-22): “Age of Faith” and The Crucible (Unit 2-3) Exam. Into to Romanticism. The Devil and Tom Walker, Longfellow, Emerson/Thoreau
Week 11 (October 28-November 1): Emerson/Thoreau poetry, Poe- “The Raven”, From Moby Dick, Writing workshops
Week 12 (November 4-8): From- The Scarlett Letter, “Minister’s Black Veil”, Writing workshops
Week 13 (November 11-15): Unit 4 Exam. Intro to Huck Finn. Ch. 1-10. Vocab and reading quizzes.
Week 14 (November 18-22) Huck Finn. Ch. 11-22. Vocab and reading quizzes. Introduce 2 page Huck Finn Essay.
Week 15 (November 25-28) Huck Finn. Ch. 23-34. Vocab and reading quizzes. In class essay
Week 16 (December 2-6) Finish Huck Finn. Huck Finn Essay due. Project due. In-class grammar.
Week 17 (December 9-13): Final Exams Review. If time allows, October Sky/MILK to connect American Dream
Week 18 (16-18): Final Exams.
