POSITION: COMMUNICATION TEACHER
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Registered Speech Therapist or equivalent
2. Certification of Clinical Competence in Speech and Language Pathology or equivalent.
3. Experience in Augmentative/ Alternative Communication systems and computer technology.
4. Fluency in sign language
5. State screened Sign Language Interpreter preferred, and/or completion of recognized Interpreter Training Program
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To provide direct services to hearing impaired/deaf students; sign language interpreting.
2. To train staff and students in Sign Language where appropriate.
3. To provide signing services for out-of-district student(s) and parents at school and or home site.
4. To be registered with the Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
5. Direct assignment to the Building Principal for routine administrative matters and to the Supervisor of Special Education for the delivery of services identified in the IEP, and related program issues.
6. Perform all duties listed herein and other appropriate tasks assigned by the Special Education Supervisor.
7. In cooperation with the Evaluation TEAM chairperson, the School Psychologist and such other special needs staff members, performs diagnostic assessments of children suspected of or diagnosed as having special needs, speech, language and voice problems, including children who would use adaptive technology devices for augmentative communication.
8. In cooperation with the Evaluation TEAM Chairperson, consult regularly with regular and special education teachers with assistive technology and augmentative devices.
9. Participate actively in the Evaluation process and TEAM meetings.
10. Assist in the development of appropriate educational plans as directed by the Evaluation TEAM chairperson.
11. Insure orderly and timely implementation of Individual Educational Plans.
12. Provide speech and language therapy on an individual and group basis.
13. Serve as consultant to teachers in the area of speech and language for students who are enrolled in regular and special classes; pre-referral services are included.
14. Report the progress of the student to the parent, teacher, and other concerned personnel on a scheduled basis.
15. Report as liaison between the parent, teacher and other school staff in the area of speech and language.
16. Submit to the Principal, the Director, the Supervisor of Special Education, all schedules and reports as required.
