Fall or long distance Backpacking Gear List
Let us know what gear you need ASAP of time. We have limited reserves of gear to lend out, including Backpacks, tents, sleeping pads, Compass and whistle, sleeping bags; a few more bits and bobs. This will be one of our biggest overnight trips of all time so we may have to improvise if need be, but we will manage the madness; we always have.
STUFF YOU MUST BRING:
**Gear:
· Backpack
· Sleeping bag
· Sleeping pad
(**we have limited amounts to lend out)
Clothing:
· A pair of sturdy hiking boots with at least 10 miles of hiking on them (preferable)
· 2 pairs of medium weight wool or synthetic socks
· 1 to 2 pairs of liner socks if you wish
· 1 to 2 pairs of hiking pants, preferably not cotton
· Swimsuit, if you want to go swimming
· 3 to 4 pairs of underwear, again preferably not cotton
· 2 to 3 T-shirts, preferably not cotton
· 1 to 2 long-sleeved t-shirt, preferably not cotton
· 1 fleece or wool sweater
· 1 warm fleece jacket or other warm but lightweight mid-layer
· 1 warm hat
· A waterproof/breathable shell jacket
· A pair of waterproof/breathable pants or wind-pants
-Trash bag liners and any stuff sacs you can get hold of -Sooo useful
Miscellaneous:
· 2 water bottles, each of which should hold around 1 liter/quart of water
· Headlamp (preferred) or small flashlight
· Toothbrush and toothpaste
· · Other personal hygiene products you might use such as contact solution, tampons, etc. Remember though, you will be carrying all of this for a couple days. Don't bring stuff like deodorant. You will stink, regardless of what you do.
· Any and all medications you take regularly
· Any medications you might need in an emergency (Asthma Inhalers, for instance)
· A small mess kit containing one of each :
o Bowl
o Mug
o Spoon and optional fork.
If you can, go to an outdoor store and get a Lexan mess kit. You can also raid Mom's pantry, but don't bring anything that is too breakable or too heavy. Plastic is good. Aluminum is good. Porcelain is not recommended.
STUFF YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING:
· 1 or 2 bandanas
· Bug spray (travel size)
· Sun block (travel size)
· Camera
STUFF WE PROVIDE FOR YOU (If you plan to bring your own backpack, sleeping bag/mat, please do!):
· Shelter (tarps)
· Stove, fuel, cooking pot, etc.
· All Food (please don't bring your own)
· All rock climbing and caving equipment (please contact us if yoau plan to bring your own)
THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT BRING:
· Pets
· Weapons of Mass Destruction
· Anything that comes under the jurisdiction of the ATF or DEA
· Make-up, hair care products, stuff to make you smell pretty, etc. This will just attract bugs or worse
· Anything that requires electricity. The only electrical devices we allow are pacemakers.
A Word on Procurement:
Your guides all love the clothing and gear that they get from Patagonia. But we also realize that their prices are a tad out there. A great way to save money is to get store-brand items. REI, EMS, and many others have their own lines of clothing that are often just as good as the stuff from Patagonia at significantly cheaper prices.
**Participants are expected to provide personal gear and items listed above. We understand that not everyone will be able purchase these items for the trip. These items can often be rented from your local outdoors store or borrowed from a friend. That said, OE does have enough gear to support participants who are unable to obtain these, and other items.
