Meeting began at 1:40pm
Diana Bonilla read through the comments from the 2014 Fall Kickoff (FKO) debriefing meeting in Sep. 2014. A brainstorming session was then conducted to determine the new goal of the program and to come up with activities and ideas to improve over what was done last year.
GOAL: Before we began to plan this year's Fall Kickoff, we needed to determine what our goal is. After much discussion, it was decided that this year's Fall Kickoff will focus on New Students (12 units or less) and focus on helping them transition to college. What do they need to know the first week of school to be successful in college? It was also discussed that the FKO should be student lead as much as possible and that ASO should have a huge presence throughout the day.
CAMPUS TOUR: Campus tours are very beneficial for first time students, and it was suggested by JaxAmbridge, the new ASO President, that students will be more engaged if they are learning about the different campus services while on the tour rather than just in an orientation. One way we could make the tour more interactive is by having a person at each stop along the tour (maybe with a pre-recorded video) who can explain a little about that place. (for example, Dennis Schroeder could be stationed in front of Financial Aid and give a short informative presentation about Financial Aid). The tour guides would lead the group of students from place to place, and answer questions, but a representative would be at each stopping point to give information about it. Presentations at each stop would need to have a time limit to keep the tours moving. Keep tour groups as small as possible.Dean Hernandez suggested creating an interactive application for the smart phones in which students would be able to easily download onto their phones. Dean Saber suggested recruiting 25-35 student ambassadors to help with the tours. JaxAmbridge stated that she would assist in the recruitment of the students.
Debby Wong expressed frustration that the tour does not include the East Campus. There was discussion on how we could include it, but it logistically does not seem possible with 400 students. It was suggested that a video could be made showing a student walking down to the East campus and then touring the buildings. This video could possibly be made by one of the student in the multi-media program and it was suggested that the committee reach out to Curtis Stage.
ORIENTATION: Half the students will be in the Campus Center Main having an orientation of some kind while the other half is on the tour. The orientation must be engaging and relevant - focus on what students need to know for their first week of school. How to find the class syllabus before the first day of class, SOCO, where to buy books, how to crash a course, add/drop/withdraw deadlines and explanations, office hours, textbooks on reserve in the library, etc. JaxAmbridge suggested having a student panel that can give information/answer questions. Martha Perez suggested showing the video "Learning the Ropes." David Jordan suggested making a video of "Top 10 Tips for Success" - maybe interview successful students - what advice would they give to new freshmen? Dennis Schroder suggested that we play Abbreviation Bingo, as many students are not familiar with the different abbreviation of the buildings around campus.
WORKSHOPS/PRESENTATIONS (?): (After students are finished with the tour & orientation.)
Ideas:Workshop on Setting Goals
Faculty/Student Panel
Faculty/Discipline Advising - each division give a short presentation
Offer Ed Plan workshops for any students who don't have an Ed Plan yet.
