Overview of the International Education Ambassadors position and responsibilities:

Purpose:

When it comes to learning more about study abroad or international education, many students usually start that conversation with their friends, or like-minded peers. In order to provide a wide range of program experiences and perspectives, we started the International Education Ambassadors program as a resource for students who want to learn more about study abroad opportunities and connect to the international community.

Qualifications:

Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at UW-L

Be in good academic standing (2.5 GPA or higher)

Demonstrated respect of cultural diversity and an interest in learning about other cultures

Has international experience (i.e. study abroad alum, a current international student, or more)

Interested in promoting study abroad and international education

Mustbe enthusiastic and have an open mind

Have good verbal and written communication skills

Be detail oriented and resourceful

Demonstrated leadership capabilities

Commitment to student success and community-building

Ability to be a team player and work with groups of diverse people

Knowledge of a variety of resources at UW-L and the La Crosse community

Responsibilities:

As an IE Ambassador, you will serve as the first point of contact for students interested in studying abroad and international students. As an IE Ambassador you’re responsible for providing students with general knowledge about UW-La Crosse’s Study Abroad programs and of International Education & Engagement (IEE) policies and procedures. You are to serve as a resource to our current and prospective students.

IE Ambassadors generally serve their office hours in International Education & Engagement’sresource area; however, may be asked on occasion to assist with activities outside of the office including, but not limited to:

Conducting information sessions for hall councils, student organizations, or classes

Attend pre-departure Study Abroad Orientation program and facilitate program specific break-out session

Attend the Study Abroad Fair

Keep up-to-date on program changes and other information

Assist with campus visitors

Research and learn about new study abroad opportunities

Assist with New International Student Orientation

Assist prospective and current international students with learning about campus and community resources

Assist with front desk management

Program marketing and organization

Other duties that may be assigned, relating to study abroad or international education

Requirements/Expectations:

All IE Ambassadors who are selected are required to attend the IE Ambassador training prior to starting in the office. IE Ambassadors must also be able to serve a minimum of 5 - 10 hours per week in the office in order to boost outreach to students and also to provide consistency with program representation. Always arrive on time with a positive attitude.

Selection Process:

Submit typed application to International Education & Engagementby 4:00pm on Friday, May 8th.

Applicants who meet the qualifications will be interviewedbetween May 18th and May 22nd.

Interviews will preferably take place in person, but via Skype is also acceptable.

Applicants will be notified by e-mail of their selection asan IEAmbassador on Tuesday, June 2nd.

Students selected as IEs must be able to attend ALL mandatory meetings and trainings (listed on p.2)

Fall 2015 – Mandatory Dates & Timeline for International Education Ambassadors:

Friday, May 8 / Applications due by 4:00 pm
May 18 – May 22 / Interviews / You will be notified if selected and with available time slots / 15-20 minute interviews in person or via Skype
Tuesday, June 2 / Selection / Candidates will be notified by e-mail of IEE’s decision
Wednesday,
August 26 / Mandatory Meeting Orientation Week, Arrival/Pickup Information, and Paperwork Meeting / All IE’s MUST attend this meeting for orientation assignments and HR paperwork / 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
August 30 – September 1 / International Student Arrival Days / IEAs interested in earning extra money can participate in picking students up from the airport or the AMTRAK station / Various times from 8:00 am – 10:00 pm including Q&A sessions in the Residence Halls
September 1 – September 6 / Mandatory- Orientation Week / All IEA’s / 7:30 am- 5:00 pm plus some evening commitments
Late September/Early October / Study Abroad Fair / Help with set-up, program promotion, etc. / 10am-2pm, based on need and availability
2nd Weekend in November & 2nd/3rd Weekend in April / Study Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation / Help with set-up, working with outbound students, and possibly faculty leaders / 12pm-5pm, based on need
September 8 – May 2016 / IE Ambassador / Times vary based upon schedule
