Description: The course introduces the fundamental operations of whole numbers, fractions and mixed numbers, decimals, percentages, measurement, and integers. The course is intended to provide a review of basics needed in later math courses and on the job.

Outcomes
Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, mixed numbers, signed numbers, decimals and percents.Understand the meaning of fractions, decimals, and percents, and conditions for their use.
Convert between decimals, fractions, and percents.
Identify numbers that belong to the different number sets: natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, and real numbers.
Evaluate algebraic expressions.
Solve proportions for an unknown, including proportions involving decimals and fractions.
Solve linear equations.
Be familiar with real life applications of ratios and proportions.
Convert between units in the English and metric systems of measurement and between units within each system.
Extract roots.
Find the perimeter and area of a variety of basic geometric figures.
Demonstrate appropriate formats for solving problems.
Communicate mathematical concepts in writing.
Communicate mathematical concepts orally.
Drop Date:
The final date to withdraw from class for no grade is Monday, October 27th, 2014. NSHE requires that grades be issued to all students enrolled in class after that date. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from class either online or at the Admissions and Records office.

Academic Dishonesty
The University and Community College System of Nevada expressly forbids all forms of academic dishonesty, including (but not limited to) all forms of cheating, copying, and plagiarism. Students who are discovered cheating will be assigned zero points for the course, and will be brought to the GBC Academic Officers for prosecution.

The GBC Math Lab has available tutors who may assist you with any of your homework assignments. If you are in need of extensive help, please call ahead to the Math Lab at 753-2149 and make an appointment Monday through Friday to guarantee the attention needed. Math Lab hours are: Mon – Thurs, 9AM – 8PM, Fri 10AM – 4PM
Grading Policy
Class Participation and Attendance:5%
You will be graded each day on whether you come to class and participated. If you come to class but don’t participate I will count you as absent.
Homework:15%
Homework will be due before class on the day of the test. For example all Chapter 1 and 2 homework will be due the date of the first test. I will NOT accept this late. Homework will need to be completed throughmathzone.com.
Tests:60%
Final:20%
Tests, including Final, can NOT be made up. They can ONLY be taken before the test is given in class. There will be no cell phones or calculators permitted for tests or you will receive a 0. However, you will be permitted to use notes. All tests will cover the above objectives for the given chapter. If you have any questions before the test regarding these objectives, please make sure to make an appointment with me or see a tutor.
