Job Description: Head/Assistant Head Custodian
Reports to: Business Administrator/Superintendent
Qualifications:
- Pass a physical examination required of all staff members.
- Be of good moral character.
- Be a high school graduate or equivalency or higher education.
- Have a sincere interest in working with children.
- Possess the ability to work cooperatively with teachers and administrators.
- Complete the fingerprint and criminal history process (CHR)
- General knowledge of building cleaning and maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of district I.P.M. plan and practices.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance on school equipment.
- Basic skills required in the following areas: HVAC, electrical and lighting, plumbing and piping systems, and light carpentry.
- Knowledge of boiler operation and maintenance (Black Seal License preferred)
- The ability to communicate with and oversee assigned custodial staff.
Functions: The Head Custodian will meet daily with all custodians in order to discuss issues directly related to the maintenance of all district school buildings. The Head Custodian will be responsible to report potential problems regarding school equipment and/or staffing concerns. These functions will be in addition to the regular duties required of a custodian.
Responsibilities:
- All cleaning duties required of the general custodial staff.
- Accept, check in, and distribute all deliveries (lifting up to fifty (50) pounds may be required).
- Any other duty as deemed by the Superintendent, Business Administrator, or head Custodian.
Supervise daily custodial duties:
- Report to work 6:00 am
- Check boiler, Safety valve, automatic water feeder, etc.
- Check all rooms for temperature, broken windows, etc.
- Display American Flag
- Check lavatories for cleanliness, hand towels, toilet, tissue, soap, disinfectant, etc,
- Clean classroom chalk board erasers
- Sweep all stairwells after children enter the building
- Unlock all doors and gates
- Dust floors in basement and corridors
- Put garbage in plastic bags and store them for collection
- Sweep and clean classrooms, offices, teacher’s room, etc.
- Wash tops of kindergarten tables
- Sweep steps to main entrance to building
- Adjust all shades and close all windows
- Clean all sinks and drinking fountains
- Lock all doors and set alarm
- Lunch duties:
- Carry in lunch from van
- Display garbage pails, with plastic bags, in lunch room
- Dispose of garbage after lunch
- Wet mop lunch room floor
- Put out horses or other device for traffic control
- Take care of any emergency that may come up
- Make any repairs that are necessary. Report repairs that cannot be done by you
- School yard must be checked for glass and broken bottles
Supervise weekly:
- Clean inside windows, corridor doors, classroom doors, and outside doors.
- Polish band and kick plates on doors
- Thorough washing of lavatories
- Wash lunch room floor
- Mop and wash down entire basement, including boiler room
- Each Sunday, during the heating seasons, reset thermostat and check heating system
- In spring and summer, cut and take care of the lawn
- Clean school yard twice a week.
Supervise Monthly:
- Set up and take down chairs for assembly (if necessary)
- Set up for PTA meetings.
- Thorough washing of lavatories (scrub and wash all tiles and stalls)
Supervise Occasional:
- Remove ice and snow, Spread ice melt.
- Replace fluorescent tubes when necessary and replace ballasts.
- Fire Drills – Assignment by Principal.
- Check batteries for water in the fire detection system
- Touch up painting when and where necessary
- Make any minor repairs
- Clean room when child has accident or vomits.
- Receive and check supplies when delivered
- Set up for special teaching areas in auditorium
- Repair broken shades, door locks, desks, etc
- Check fire extinguishers
- Clean any graffiti when it happens
- Do minor maintenance
Supervise Fall – Spring
- Cut grass and remove weeds on building grounds
- Sweep up leaves and place then in plastic bags
- Wash tops of desks and chairs
- Clean interior windows, including inside of classroom and auditorium
- Wash and wax floors of rooms with vinyl-asbestos tile – Thorough cleaning of roms with wooden floors with treated mop
- Wash basement, lunch room and corridors
Supervise Summer
- Paint rooms or any area designated by Board of Education (Mr. Caufield has a schedule for painting)
- Paint all classrooms and gymnasium, when necessary
- Wash all desks and chairs completely
- Strip, wash and wax all floors in classrooms, auditorium, offices, library and teachers’ room
- Paint lavatories in basement
- Clean inside of classroom windows and inside and outside of interior windows
- Paint basement floor and dado, including boiler room
- Paint steps in stairwells
- Make major repairs that could not be done during school year
- Wash all chalkboards
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE BUILDING AND GROUNDS BE CLEAN, NEAT AND SAFE AT ALL TIMES
These duties may be altered or changed at the discretion of the Business Administrator and/or Superintendent
