By Haley Ashwood, Media Intern

OKLAHOMA CITY –Ethan Sacket of the Fairview FFA Chapter earned first-place honors in the 2018Oklahoma FFA Diversified Horticulture Proficiency Award area during the 92nd Oklahoma FFA Convention May 2.

Hannah Williams of the Elmore City-Pernell FFA Chapter and Ravin Norbury of the Woodward FFA Chapter earned second- and third-place honors, respectively.

Sacket learned from his landscape business that his greatest reward is not monetary, but it is in serving others. Sacket said in the beginning, he did not have a lot of experience in landscaping, but he was able to learn from others who shared their knowledge with him. Sacket said he assists the elderly community by maintaining yards they are no longer able to manage, as well as landscapes a local memorial and cemetery.

“As an entrepreneur, I seek to learn everything possible about horticulture,” Sacket said. “From the grass to compatibility of plants and fertilizers. I have managed to complete projects from the ground up, by measuring and calculating the needs of areas and selecting shrubs and plants.”

The diversified horticulture proficiency award is designed to recognize students who are involved in a supervised agricultural experience related to managing two or more of the following proficiency areas: floriculture, landscape management, nursery operationsor turf grass management.

After graduation, Sacket wants to earn a strategic communications degree and pursue a career in public service.
