Webquest

Webquests encourage pupils to work cooperatively to investigate a topic using resources including the internet. This webquest looks at the production of chocolate and Fairtrade.

LTScotland

The LTS site links the topic of fair trade to the Curriculum for Excellence and is a good place to start to explore fair trade for both the classroom and for the wider school. There are suggestions for classroom activities and whole school projects for Fairtrade fortnight.

Fairplay drama

This site contains free downloadable scripts for short plays for Fairtrade fortnight. There are scripts ranging in length from 10 to 40 minutes for both primary and secondary pupils which can include music if you wish.

Oxfam

Oxfam have produced a brilliant site for teachers from which you can download excellent resources for assemblies and for use in the classroom including interactive whiteboard activities. The site is easy to search and navigate. If you are looking for somewhere to start, try here!

Traidcraft

The Traidcraft site contains lesson plans for geography, English, RME and citizenship classes. The lesson on fair trade focuses on skills of debating and persuasive writing. The site also contains a link to see the flipside –a site for pupils encouraging them to buy Fairtrade goods.

The site contains games: an orange trading game which can be used with classes which highlight Southern farmers lives and working conditions and the benefits of Fair Trade; an interdependency activity to show how our actions affect each other; and suggestions for unfair games to illustrate the difference between living in a rich and poor economy.

Traidcraft can also provide speakers who are keen to spread the Fair Trade message. Information and links to find out how to become a Fairtrade school are also on the site.

Co-op

The Co-op has launched its Fairtrade Friendly Primary School pack which can be downloaded from The pack contains loads of information and ideas about how to bring fair trade to the classroom.

A secondary school pack is to follow in early 2008.

CAFOD

The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) site has downloadable resources for primary schools including a quiz, games and a whiteboard activity. There are also suggestions for celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight and information on becoming a Fairtrade school. Visit CAFOD Kidz Zone for fun Fairtrade games for primary school children.

Papapaa

Dubble Fairtrade Chocolate and Comic Relief have teamed up to produce the fantastic ‘Pa Pa Paa’ teaching resource, complete with everything you need to teach about Fair Trade and cocoa. You can download free lesson plans and activities at . A ‘Pa Pa Paa’ photo and DVD pack is also available to order – this may be part of your resource pack – please check if unsure with the Montgomery Centre.

Young people can also sign up to be Dubble Agents, and join thousands of others on a mission to change the world, chunk by chunk! Sign up at to receive a free choc-secret mission pack, ‘Choc-Alert’ email updates and access to missions and competitions. The Dubble website is also packed with Fairtrade information and activities.

SCIAF

The Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) provides advice for schools working towards gaining a Fairtrade status.

SCIAF also provides talks, workshops and resources on global citizenship and trade justice issues. Their website contains links to many more web resources. Visit

People and Planet

People & Planet is a dynamic student campaigning network. They support university students and sixthformers in taking action on Fair Trade, Trade Justice and other global issues. They set up groups in schools and colleges and support them with campaign packs, workshops, events and advice. The site contains an action guide and features a new cotton and clothing campaign.

Christian Aid

Christian Aid host a funky website for children which contains Fair Trade games and activities. The children will be delighted to find out how chocolate can be good for you and find out how fair trade affects the lives of children in other countries.

The section of the site for teachers contains materials for primary and secondary teaching.

Action Aid

Action Aid produce campaigning and educational resources onFair Trade and wider development issues.

The site contains a helpful Q and A section on free trade, fair trade and trade justice.

Fairtrade Foundation

The Fairtrade Foundation is the charity which regulates the Fairtrade mark which is awarded to products which gain Fairtrade status. The site contains profiles of Fairtrade producers and lists each of the Fairtrade products and where to buy them. The number of certified Fairtrade products carrying the logo now stands at 3900 (Dec 2007).

The foundation also promotes Fairtrade and runs campaigns to convert towns, workplaces and schools to become Fairtrade. The schools page is

It is worth registering your school if you are interested, as registered schools receive free updates and newsletters about the campaign.

Young Cooperatives

Young Cooperatives is an initiative to help young people to establish and run their own co-operative businesses selling Fairtrade products. It offers an accredited Certificate in Cooperative and Fairtrade Enterprise. Their membership team is also willing help schools through the process of becoming a Fairtrade School.
