PhD Fellowships in Arctic Technology

Department of Marine Technology, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technologyat the NorwegianUniversity of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applicants for up to 2 PhD research fellowships in Arctic Technology.

The fellowships are linked to a large three year (2007-2009) National Strategic Research Program covering the following main areas:

Energy from the North

Renewable Energy

Sustainable Infrastructure

The program is funded jointly by the Research Council of Norway and NTNU. Possible areas for research with respective contact persons are listed below.The fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis.

Energy from the North. Co-ordinator: Professor Stig Berge (), Dept. of Marine Technology.

Structures, materials and environment: (1 PhD)

▪Integrated finite element analysis of ice-structure interaction, ice-load monitoring: Professor Jørgen Amdahl () and Professor Bernt Leira (), Dept. of Marine Technology.

Marine operations: (1 PhD)

▪Flow phenomena in ship-to-ship marine operations in arctic waters: Professor Bjørnar Pettersen (), Dept. of Marine Technology

Applicants should have an MSc or similar degree within relevant engineering or technologyareas. Students completing their MSc before 1July 2008 are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must be qualified for a PhD study at the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, NTNU. The application should comprise a2-3 page description of the research plans (including scope, objectives and approach), based on discussions with the supervisor in charge. A brief recommendation from the supervisor must be included.

PhD research fellowships are awarded for a total of 3 or 4 years. Fellowships for 4 years include 25 % of teaching assistance at the bachelor’s and master’s degree level. These duties are commonly distributed over the 4 years, with a larger proportion during the two first years.

Salaries:

PhD fellows follow code 1017, grade 43-47, gross NOK325 600 to NOK348 900 per annum (before tax). PhD fellows are normally remunerated at wage level 43. A pension contribution to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse) of 2 % of gross salary will be deducted.

The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges. Applicants are obliged to engage on an organized PhD programme, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for a PhD study.
