INCLUDE:

  • A one-page statement of intention with:
  • Project description
  • Likely funding source(s), if known
  • Draft budget (e.g., salary, travel, administrative costs)
  • A copy of the proposal instructions from the foundation or funding agency

ALL GRANT APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE APPROVED BY DUKE UNIVERSITY AND THE DIVINITY SCHOOL BEFORE MOVING FORWARD WITH THE GRANTING AGENCY.

THEN WHAT HAPPENS?

1. CLEARANCE REQUESTED:Dan Strublewill contact the University’s Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations and/orthe Office of Research Support (ORS) to request clearance. The information will be entered into the Sponsored Projects System (SPS).

2. CLEARANCE GRANTED OR DENIED: Rob Knebel will let you know when the university has granted clearance and the application can move forward. If clearance is denied (usually because someone else at the universityhas already approaching the grantor), Rob will help you determine when to re-apply.

3. PROPOSAL MEETING: If necessary, Rob Knebelor someone from External Relations will set up a meeting with you to discuss timing, proposal format, and budget. Depending on the scope of the project, several meetings may be required.

4. INTERNAL REVIEW BOARD:Check the website to determine if your research protocol must be approved by theInternal Review Board, which regulates research into human subjects or human subject data. Instructions for completing this processare at

5. IF THE REQUESTED BUDGET IS FOR A GRANT OF $50,000 OR MORE, submit your completed grant proposal with detailed budget to Rob Knebel at least ONE MONTH BEFORE THE DEADLINE. These proposals must be signed by the university president. This process can take one month.

6. If the requested budget is for a grant of less than $50,000, SUBMIT A FULL GRANT PROPOSAL WITH DETAILED BUDGET to Rob Knebel AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE DEADLINE. The General Administration and Finance (GAF) office at Duke Divinity School needs this time prepare the university grant forms and secure the necessary signatures.

7. Rob Knebel will forward the proposal to Faten Antoun for processing, and if necessary they will contact the University’s Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations to let it know the proposal has been submitted.

7. NOTIFY ROB Knebelonce your proposal has been accepted or rejected. He will notify ORS and process the grant through the university system.

8. IF YOUR PROPOSAL IS REJECTED, seek information (whenever possible) about why the proposal was not funded and explore other funding sources as appropriate following this protocol. Be sure to notify the GAF office and External Relations office at the Divinity School of the response from the agency or partner.
