Class Description: 7th grade Math will be a review of many of the concepts introduced in 6th grade plus an introduction to Algebra and Geometry. The instructional emphasis will be math in “real life”. Special emphasis will be on not just being able to “do math”, but explain how you do math. This emphasis enables the student to have a much greater understanding of math concepts. You may review the Georgia Standards for 7th grade math at https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Documents/Grade-6-8-Mathematics-Standards.pdf

Common Core Georgia Performance Standards: 7th grade the Math curriculum will cover the following materials. We will cover the material in the order shown.

Operations with Rational Numbers Students will apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships Students will analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Expressions and Equations Students will use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. Students will solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

Geometry Students will draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them. Students will solve real-life mathematical problems involving angle measures, area, surface area, and volume.

Statistics Students will use random sampling to draw inferences about a population. Students will draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.

Probability Students will investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability models.

Teacher Responsibility: It is my goal to prepare your child for the Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) in Mathematics. It is also my goal to teach your child how to be successful in all academic areas through good study habits and improved organizational skills.

REMIND: I use REMIND, a text/email based information tool, to notify parents and students of upcoming assignments, tests, projects, etc. I highly encourage each parent and student to sign up for this service – it is FREE and does not reveal your phone number when used. Sign up by texting @mylesma to 81010 or go to https://www.remind.com

Student Responsibility: It is the student’s duty to complete warm-ups, class-work, homework, tests, and quizzes. All students are expected to follow classroom rules. It is also the responsibility of the student to make-up any work missed when absent from our class. The student should be prepared for each class period. Being prepared includes having their textbook, paper, pencil and agenda. Students shall also treat all class materials and textbooks with care and without willful damage.

Missed Assignments: If you are absent, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain any missed assignments from my website located on the FSMS website under School Staff. An appropriate amount of time per the Factory Shoals Parent/Student handbook will be allowed to turn in missed assignments.

Late/Makeup Work: Late/makeup work will be accepted, but an appropriate reduction in the grade for the assignment will occur (usually 10 points for every day late). It is the student’s responsibility to be prepared for class each day and that includes turning in work when it is due. Late work as the result of an excused school absence must be made up in a “reasonable amount of time” which is per Douglas County policy. Late work as the result of an excused school absence will not have any reduction in grade.

Homework: All homework assignments are to be completed at home. Homework is graded for accuracy and/or completion. Homework assignments are collected at the beginning of the class period on its due date. Homework is not accepted at the end of the class period or after the day it is due without an appropriate grade reduction. All work must be shown. Answers only will not be given any credit. Weekly Basics will be the primary homework assignment each week.

Class work: All class work is to be completed in class. Class work will be graded for accuracy and/or completion. All class work is usually collected by the end of the class period. Class work will not be accepted after the day it is due without an appropriate grade reduction. Class work will also include technology assignments (primarily Mobymax.com).

Quizzes and Tests: All quizzes and tests (including technology based assessments) will be scheduled and announced in advance.

Class Participation: Students are required to participate in class activities, class discussions, and group work. Class participation shall also include being prepared each day with required materials.

Teacher Website: I update my website weekly and it includes a short summary of what we covered in class, notes given, resources used, warm-up problems, vocabulary, and any homework (Weekly Basics) assignment. The website should be checked daily. To access website, go to http://tinyurl.com/fsmsga

Textbook and resource materials: Each student shall be given a textbook (Glencoe Georgia Mathematics, Volumes 1 and 2) to be used at school and at home. It is imperative that the textbook is brought to class every day. Crosswalk Coach Plus for the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Grade 7 by Triumphlearning will be used on occasion to supplement the student’s own textbook. Lost textbooks must be replaced immediately at the students’ expense. Students will need pencils (wooden preferred), pens, notebook paper, a 3-ringed binder with dividers for each subject, and a composition book (not one that has a spiral binder). Colored pencils, glue sticks, and other classroom materials are not required for math class.

Resources: Check my webpage for various resources and helps.

Classroom Rules and Procedures:

1.  The teacher will treat every student with respect even when the student is being disciplined.

2.  Teacher instructions and re-direction must be followed immediately (within 5 seconds).

3.  Be prepared at all times: Homework completed, textbook, paper, pencil, pen and agenda brought to class daily.

4.  Do not talk while others are speaking or presenting. Talking out-of-turn inhibits the ability of others in the class to learn. We do not have the right to keep others from learning.

5.  Raise your hand if you have a question or comment. Wait to be called upon before speaking.

6.  Respect your teacher and classmates. Treat them as you would like to be treated.

7.  Refrain from making negative comments about other students, teachers, or administrators.

8.  All agenda messages must be written in ink. No student shall be permitted to exit the class until the agenda message has been copied neatly and correctly.

9.  If a student is completing an assignment for another class period during instructional time, the assignment will be confiscated and will NOT be returned.

10.  Any student caught cheating on tests or quizzes will be subject to disciplinary action.

Classroom Rewards:

·  A “Good” phone call or e-mail home

·  Team celebrations

·  Homework pass

·  Goodies

Classroom Consequences:

These steps are in accordance with the Factory Shoals Discipline Plan

1.  Warning/student teacher conference and note in agenda

2.  Silent lunch/preferential seating/student teacher conference and note in agenda

3.  Parent contact and after-school detention and note in agenda

4.  After-school detention and ½ day in the Opportunity Room and note in agenda

5.  Administrative referral and note in agenda

6.  Chronic offenders (multiple times in ISS or OSS) will be assigned Saturday detention which runs from 6 to 8 AM.
