SECTION 211100 – FACILITY FIRE-SUPPRESSION WATER-SERVICE PIPING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  RELATED DOCUMENTS

1.3  SUBMITTALS

  1. Product data for fire protection system components.
  2. Shop Drawings: For the following:
  3. Working plans, prepared according to NFPA13, that have been reviewed and "approved" or "accepted" by Owner's Insurer, Chrysler Corporate Fire Team, and authorities having jurisdiction. Include system hydraulic calculations.
  4. Submit one copy of drawings, calculations and associated correction letters from reviewers, within 2 weeks of approval.
  5. Field Quality-Control Test Reports: From Contractor.
  6. Operation and Maintenance Data: For specialties to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals.

1.4  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Comply with requirements of Chrysler Fire Standard 105, for approvals, materials, installation, inspections, and testing.
  2. Regulatory Requirements:
  3. Comply with standards of authorities having jurisdiction for fire-suppression water-service piping, including materials, hose threads, installation, and testing.
  4. Piping materials shall bear label, stamp, or other markings of specified testing agency.
  5. Comply with ASTMF645 for selection, design, and installation of Non-metallic water piping.

1.5  DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Preparation for Transport: Prepare valves, including fire hydrants, according to the following:
  2. Ensure that valves are dry and internally protected against rust and corrosion.
  3. Protect valves against damage to threaded ends and flange faces.
  4. Set valves in best position for handling. Set valves closed to prevent rattling.
  5. During Storage: Use precautions for valves, including fire hydrants, according to the following:
  6. Do not remove end protectors unless necessary for inspection; then reinstall for storage.
  7. Protect from weather. Store indoors and maintain temperature higher than ambient dew-point temperature. Support off the ground or pavement in watertight enclosures when outdoor storage is necessary.
  8. Handling: Use sling to handle valves and fire hydrants if size requires handling by crane or lift. Rig valves to avoid damage to exposed parts. Do not use handwheels or stems as lifting or rigging points.
  9. Deliver piping with factory-applied end caps. Maintain end caps through shipping, storage, and handling to prevent pipe-end damage and to prevent entrance of dirt, debris, and moisture.
  10. Protect stored piping from moisture and dirt. Elevate above grade.
  11. Protect flanges, fittings, and specialties from moisture and dirt.
  12. Store plastic piping protected from direct sunlight. Support to prevent sagging and bending.

1.6  PROJECT CONDITIONS

  1. Existing Utilities: Do not interrupt utilities serving facilities occupied by Owner or others unless permitted under the following conditions and then only after arranging to provide temporary utility services according to requirements indicated:
  2. Notify Owner's Representative not less than two days in advance of proposed utility interruptions.
  3. Do not proceed with utility interruptions without Owner's Representative's written permission.

1.7  COORDINATION

  1. Coordinate connection to water main with Owner.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1  PRODUCTS

  1. Provide products specified or complying with the requirements specified in Chrysler Fire Standard 105, and authority having jurisdiction.

2.2  FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTIONS

  1. Exposed, Freestanding-Type: UL405, 175-psig minimum pressure rating; with corrosion-resistant-metal body, brass inlets having threads according to NFPA1963 and matching local fire department sizes and threads, and bottom outlet with pipe threads. Include brass lugged caps, gaskets, and brass chains; brass lugged swivel connection and drop clapper for each hose-connection inlet; 18-inch- high, brass sleeve; and round, floor, brass escutcheon plate with marking "FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION."
  2. Type: Multiple 21/2 inch inlets.
  3. Finish Including Sleeve: Rough chrome-plated.
  4. Wall Hydrant Pumper Connection: Storz, Model 6625, 4” NPT x 5” Storz, 30 degree angle pattern, hard coated aluminum construction or as required by the local AHJ. Include Storz cap, Model 6645 with securing chain.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1  EARTHWORK

  1. Refer to Division31 Section "Earth Moving" for excavating, trenching, and backfilling.

3.2  PIPING APPLICATIONS

  1. General: Use pipe, fittings, and joining methods for piping systems according to the following applications.
  2. Transition couplings and special fittings with pressure ratings at least equal to piping pressure rating may be used in applications below, unless otherwise indicated.
  3. Do not use flanges, unions, or keyed couplings for underground piping.
  4. Flanges, unions, keyed couplings, and special fittings may be used, instead of joints indicated, on aboveground piping and piping in vaults.
  5. Underground Fire-Service-Main Piping: Use the following:
  6. NPS4 to NPS8: Ductile-iron, mechanical-joint pipe; ductile-iron, mechanical-joint fittings; and mechanical joints.
  7. NPS4 to NPS8: PVC, AWWAClass 200 pipe listed for fire-protection service; PVC fabricated or molded fittings of same class as pipe; and gasketed joints.
  8. NPS10 and NPS12: Ductile-iron, mechanical-joint pipe; ductile-iron, mechanical-joint fittings; and mechanical joints.
  9. NPS10 and NPS12: PVC, AWWAClass 200 pipe listed for fire-protection service; PVC fabricated or molded fittings of same class as pipe; and gasketed joints.

3.3  VALVE APPLICATIONS

  1. General Application: Use mechanical-joint-end valves for NPS3 and larger underground installation. Use threaded- or flanged-end valves for installation in vaults. Use UL/FM, nonrising-stem gate valves for installation with indicator posts. Use corporation valves and curb valves with ends compatible with piping, for NPS2 and smaller installation.
  2. Drawings indicate valve types to be used. Where specific valve types are not indicated, the following requirements apply:
  3. Underground Valves, NPS3 and Larger: AWWA, cast-iron, nonrising-stem, high-pressure, resilient-seated gate valves with valve box.
  4. Underground Valves, NPS4 and Larger, for Indicator Posts: UL/FM, cast-iron, nonrising-stem gate valves with indicator post. Post indicator valves with hollow control stem or plastic control stem shall not b eused on Chrysler properties.

3.4  PIPING INSTALLATION

  1. Make connections larger than NPS2 with tapping machine according to the following:
  2. Install tapping sleeve and tapping valve according to MSSSP-60.
  3. Install tapping sleeve on pipe to be tapped. Position flanged outlet for gate valve.
  4. Use tapping machine compatible with valve and tapping sleeve; cut hole in main. Remove tapping machine and connect water-service piping.
  5. Install gate valve onto tapping sleeve. Comply with MSSSP-60. Install valve with stem pointing up and with valve box.
  6. Make connections NPS2 and smaller with drilling machine according to the following:
  7. Install service-saddle assemblies and corporation valves in size, quantity, and arrangement required by utility company standards.
  8. Install service-saddle assemblies on water-service pipe to be tapped. Position outlets for corporation valves.
  9. Use drilling machine compatible with service-saddle assemblies and corporation valves. Drill hole in main. Remove drilling machine and connect water-service piping.
  10. Install corporation valves into service-saddle assemblies.
  11. Install manifold for multiple taps in water main.
  12. Install curb valve in water-service piping with head pointing up and with service box.
  13. Install ductile-iron, water-service piping according to AWWAC600 and AWWAM41.
  14. Install PE corrosion-protection encasement according to ASTMA674 or AWWAC105.
  15. Install PVC, AWWA pipe according to AWWAM23 and ASTMF645.
  16. Bury piping with depth of cover over top at least 30 inches, with top at least 12 inches below level of maximum frost penetration, and according to the following:
  17. Under Driveways: With at least 36 inches cover over top.
  18. Under Railroad Tracks: With at least 48 inches cover over top.
  19. In Loose Gravelly Soil and Rock: With at least 12 inches additional cover.
  20. Install piping by tunneling, jacking, or combination of both, under streets and other obstructions that cannot be disturbed.
  21. Mechanical sleeve seals are specified in Division23 Section "Common Work Results for Plumbing."
  22. Install underground piping with restrained joints at horizontal and vertical changes in direction per Chrysler Fire Standard 105 Use restrained-joint piping, thrust blocks, anchors, tie-rods and clamps, and other supports.
  23. Anchor service-entry piping to building wall.
  24. See Division21 Sections for fire-suppression water piping inside the building.

3.5  JOINT CONSTRUCTION

  1. Make pipe joints according to the following:
  2. Ductile-Iron Piping, Gasketed Joints for Water-Service Piping: AWWA C600 and AWWAM41.
  3. Ductile-Iron Piping, Gasketed Joints for Fire-Service-Main Piping: UL194.
  4. Ductile-Iron Piping, Grooved Joints: Cut-groove pipe. Assemble joints with keyed couplings, gaskets, lubricant, and bolts according to coupling manufacturer's written instructions.
  5. PVC Piping Gasketed Joints: Use joining materials according to AWWAC900. Construct joints with elastomeric seals and lubricant according to ASTMD2774 or ASTMD3139 and pipe manufacturer's written instructions.
  6. Dissimilar Materials Piping Joints: Use adapters compatible with both piping materials, with OD, and with system working pressure. Refer to Division2 Section "Utility Materials" for joining piping of dissimilar metals.

3.6  ANCHORAGE INSTALLATION

  1. Install anchorages for tees, plugs and caps, bends, crosses, valves, and hydrant branches. Include anchorages for the following piping systems:
  2. Gasketed-Joint, Ductile-Iron, Water-Service Piping: According to AWWAC600.
  3. Gasketed-Joint, PVC Water-Service Piping: According to AWWAM23.
  4. Fire-Service-Main Piping: According to NFPA24.
  5. Apply full coat of asphalt or other acceptable corrosion-resistant material to surfaces of installed ferrous anchorage devices.

3.7  VALVE INSTALLATION

  1. AWWA Gate Valves: Comply with AWWAC600 and AWWAM44. Install each underground valve with stem pointing up and with valve box.
  2. UL/FM Gate Valves: Comply with NFPA24. Install each underground valve and valves in vaults with stem pointing up and with vertical cast-iron or plastic indicator post.
  3. Relief Valves: Install aboveground with shutoff valve on inlet.
  4. Detector Check Valves: Install in vault or aboveground.

3.8  BACKFLOW-PREVENTER INSTALLATION

  1. Install backflow preventers of type, size, and capacity indicated. Include valves and test cocks. Install according to requirements of plumbing and health department and authorities having jurisdiction.
  2. Do not install backflow preventers with relief drain in vault or other space subject to flooding.
  3. Do not install bypass piping around backflow preventers.
  4. Support NPS2-1/2 and larger backflow preventers, valves, and piping near floor and on brick or concrete piers.

3.9  VAULT INSTALLATION

  1. See Division3 Section "Cast-in-Place Concrete" for concrete vaults.
  2. Install precast concrete vaults according to ASTMC891.
  3. Connect drain outlet to storm drainage piping. Refer to Division33 Section "Storm Utility Drainage Piping."

3.10  PROTECTIVE ENCLOSURE INSTALLATION

  1. Install concrete base level and with top approximately 2 inches above grade, unless otherwise directed.
  2. Install protective enclosure over valves and equipment.
  3. Anchor protective enclosure to concrete base.

3.11  FIRE HYDRANT INSTALLATION

  1. General: Install each fire hydrant with separate gate valve in supply pipe, anchor with restrained joints and thrust blocks as required by Chrysler Fire Standard 105, and support in upright position.
  2. Dry-Barrel Fire Hydrants: Install with valve below frost line. Provide for drainage.
  3. UL/FM-Type Fire Hydrants: Comply with NFPA24.

3.12  FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION INSTALLATION

  1. Install fire department connections of types and features indicated.
  2. Set at location as indicated or directed by the Owner or the local AHJ. Orientate connections towards the road as directed by the Owner or the local AHJ.
  3. Install ball drip valves at each check valve for fire department connection to mains.
  4. Install protective pipe bollards having configuration and quantity as indicated on the Drawings, for each freestanding fire department connection. Refer to Division5 Section "Metal Fabrications" for pipe bollards.

3.13  CONNECTIONS

  1. Piping installation requirements are specified in other Division33 Sections. Drawings indicate general arrangement of piping and specialties.
  2. Connect water-distribution piping to existing water main. Usetapping sleeve and tapping valve.

3.14  FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

  1. Piping Tests: Conduct piping Hydrostatic tests before joints are covered and after thrust blocks have hardened sufficiently. Fill pipeline 24 hours before testing and apply 50 psi to stabilize system. Use only potable water.
  2. Hydrostatic Tests: Conduct as described in Chrysler Fire Syandard 105.Increase pressure in 50-psig increments and inspect each joint between increments. Hold at test pressure for 1 hour; decrease to 0 psig. Slowly increase again to test pressure and hold for 1 more hour. Maximum allowable leakage is 2 quarts per hour per 100 joints. Remake leaking joints with new materials and repeat test until leakage is within allowed limits.
  3. Prepare and distribute reports of testing activities.

3.15  IDENTIFICATION

  1. Install continuous underground warning tape to all plastic underground piping during backfilling of trench for underground water-service piping as described in Chrysler Fire Standard 105. See Division31 Section "Earth Moving" for underground warning tapes.

3.16  FLUSHING

  1. Refer to Chrysler Fire Standard 105.
  2. Clean water-distribution piping as follows:
  3. Flush new water-distribution piping systems and parts of existing systems that have been altered, extended, or repaired before use.
  4. Use flushing procedure prescribed by Chrysler Fire Standard 105
  5. Prepare and distribute reports of flushing activities.
