“Facilitating intercultural dialogue in open youth work in Europe”

Training for experienced youth workers and volunteers

Do you think the working methods which you are using in your youth organisation/club are getting old and not functional? Do you need inspiration and innovative methods?Are you interested in developing your skills as a trainer in international atmosphere? Are you keen to learn more from other youth leaders and trainers from various European countries?

With this Seminarwe want to offer the youth leaders and trainers the possibility to develop their skills and knowledge on non-formal education methods around the themes of intercultural learning and human rights education.

We aim to:

  • Provide youth leaders and trainers from across Europe with the skills, knowledge and information relevant to being trainer in an all-inclusive youth work practice.
  • Enable participants to provide training to other youth leaders and youth workers in their own communities and organisations.
  • Discuss differences and similarities in youth work practices throughout Europe
  • Develop and explore training tools and practices from different areas.
  • Create a space to share best practices and develop co-operation among participants from youth work organisations

Our objectives are to create the space to:

  • Understand and explain the role of the trainer and identify the key characteristics and qualities of an effective trainer
  • Articulate and utilise a wide range of training tools and techniques and introduce new methods in youth work
  • Identify the range of issues involved in preparing and evaluating training for all-inclusive youth work and some ways of doing this.
  • Explore a number of ways of handling difficult situations which might arise during training.
  • Understand and explain the basic principles of the theory of learning styles
  • Work further on new project ideas developed during the training among ECYC member organisations.
  • To increase the understanding of young volunteers/youth workers from theECYC network of intercultural dialogue at local, national andinternational level
  • To increase the skills of young volunteers/youth workers from the ECYCnetwork in facilitating projects which promote interculturaldialogue
  • To give young volunteers/youth workers from the ECYC network the tools to beable to work with international groups.

Working methods and programme

The study session will use a variety of methods to achieve its aims. This is likely to include small and large group discussions, teambuilding exercises, energizers, open spaces, plenary sessions, simulation games and role-plays, workshops, individual and group reflection sessions, individual and group presentations, guest speakers,theoretical inputand more…

Intercultural learning, peep to peer learning, experience exchange will be the basis for the learning process.

The programme will include e.g. the following items:

  • Assessing one’s own training skills with existing tools
  • Different learning styles and how to adapt them in training
  • New training resources and methods and how to find and use them
  • Getting to know the essentials of planning, running and evaluation of training
  • Planning future projects and follow-up

The final programme will be sent to selected participants later on.

  • You have taken part in one or more activities organised by ECYC or have been active within an ECYC member organizations
  • You have a strong involvement in an ECYC member organisation with an active interest in sharing the learning gained during the seminar.
  • You are between the age of 18-35
  • You are fluent in English, as this will be the working language of the seminar.
  • You are motivated to develop your knowledge and skills on training and to share your experiences with other participants
  • You are committed to attend for the full duration of the course

What next?

All candidates must apply using the enclosed application form (please type!!). Applications should be sent to ECYC Secretary General Rares Craiut by email at Deadline for applications: 27th of August at 12:00 CET.

Before filling in your application, please have a look at the “Practical information” below to be sure that you agree and are comfortable with the practical terms and conditions for the training course.

The preparatory team will select 24 participants on the basis of the profile outlined above and ensuring a balanced group (gender, geographical regions, different types of experiences, cultural backgrounds and organisations). The selected participants will be informed by the end of June and will receive the course documentation directly from ECYC.

ECYC member organisations, please note!

Priority will be given to participants who have taken part or organised/worked as a trainer in ECYC activities before. Nevertheless, if the applicant has actively organised activities or worked as a trainer in their own organisations they are also encouraged to apply.

Each member organisation is invited to nominate one person. In case of more applicants the nominating organisation is asked to prioritise their candidates.

Practical information

  • Arrivalin Kildare during the day on Sunday 22ndof September, no later than 19.00
  • Departure on Sunday 29th of Septemberafter breakfast
  • Accommodation and meals will be provided and paid for. The participants may need to share rooms.
  • An enrolment fee of 75 Euros is payable by each participant. This amount will be deducted from the amount to be reimbursed for travel expenses.
  • Participants MUST follow the travel rules outlined by the Council of Europe regarding type of travel, tickets and so on. Failure to follow these guidelines will lead to the travel reimbursement NOT being paid to the participant(s). 70% of the travel expenses and visa fees are reimbursed (on presentation of the relevant receipts) according to the rules of the Council of Europe. Only the participants who attend the entire study session can be reimbursed. The payment will be made either by bank transfer after the course, or at the end of the course in cash (in Euros). Participants are asked to use the cheapest transportation possible. Please do not book your flights until your participation has been confirmed!!
  • Participants requiring a visa should be in contact with the ECYC secretariat as soon as possible. The cost of the visa will be reimbursed upon presentation of a receipt. Agency fee or visa service fee will not be reimbursed. If the participant has to travel to get the visa the cost of the travel is not automatically reimbursed.
  • Each organisation sending participants is responsible for arranging suitable insurance coverage (travel + physical / medical) of their own delegates.
