Unit Title
ZE4
/Facilitate individual learning through coaching
Summary
This unit is about facilitating individual learning through the use of coaching in both skills and knowledge. The first element focuses on the actual coaching, including checking learners’ progress and giving them feedback. The second element focuses on assisting individuals to apply their learning. This includes finding opportunities for learners to practise what they have learnt and ensuring that they are clear about the people and resources available to help them. There are two elements:
ZE4.1 / Coach individual learnersZE4.2 / Assist individual learners to apply their learning
Target Group
This unit is for workers who enable individuals to learn and develop through coaching. The individuals may be those who have offended, those at risk of offending, those affected by crime and anti-social behaviour or colleagues.Linked Units
The following units are closely related:
ZE2Design learning programmes to meet learners’ requirements
ZE3Support and advise individual learners
ZE5Facilitate individual learning and development through mentoring
ZE6Facilitate learning in groups through presentations and activities
ZE7Facilitate learning through demonstration and instruction
ZE8Monitor and review progress with learners
ZE9Evaluate training and development programmes

Element
ZE4.1
/Coach individual learners
Performance Criteria
To meet the standard, you
1 / base coaching on an accurate identification of individual needs and learning style2 / base coaching on an accurate identification of agreed learning objectives
3 / give coaching in a manner and pace appropriate to learners
4 / base coaching in skills on an accurate analysis of the components of the skill and the sequence in which they need to be learnt
5 / check learners’ progress regularly and modify coaching as appropriate
6 / give timely feedback to learners in a positive and encouraging manner on the process of learning and progress towards learning outcomes
7 / accurately identify and explore factors which are inhibiting learning with learners
Range
1 / Coaching ina / skills
b / knowledge
Element
ZE4.2
/Assist individual learners to apply their learning
Performance Criteria
To meet the standard, you
1 / identify a range of opportunities to enable learners to apply what they have learnt2 / identify opportunities which ensure that learners will have the opportunity of achieving agreed learning objectives
3 / identify opportunities which enable learners to practise skills, acquire knowledge, and gain experience in a structured way
4 / identify and agree with learners ways of integrating different learning opportunities
5 / give learners clear and accurate information about other people and resources involved in helping them to apply their learning
6 / give timely feedback to learners in a positive and encouraging manner on the progress towards learning objectives
7 / identify accurately and explore with learners factors which are inhibiting learning
8 / explain clearly to learners the ongoing support available to them
Range
1 / Resourcesa / learning materials
b / financial support
c / facilities
d / locations
e / equipment

Knowledge and Understanding
To meet the standard, you need to know and understand
1 / how to identify individual learning needs2 / different learning styles
3 / how to match coaching opportunities with individual learning needs and learning objectives
4 / how to sequence and pace information and gauge appropriateness of language for individual learners
5 / how to put learners at ease
6 / how to give constructive feedback
7 / likely factors which inhibit learning and possible ways of overcoming them
8 / how to check learners’ understanding and progress
9 / opportunities available for learners to apply their learning and how to match them against learning objectives
10 / how to integrate different learning opportunities
11 / methods of structuring learning activities
12 / how to encourage learners to recognise their own achievement
Assessment Guidance
When planning assessment, candidates should consider how they may best use evidence across a number of units. Evidence from the following units may be particularly relevant to this unit:
D303 Prepare, implement and evaluate group activities (D03) (Care X16)
E403 Prepare and provide agreed individual development activities for individuals (Care X2)
F314 Facilitate individual learning and development through mentoring
F316 Facilitate learning through demonstration and instruction (TDLB C24)
Candidates may wish to use these sources of evidence:
1the products of their work
2notes and drafts of their analysis during the process of producing reports and products
3notes and minutes of the meetings
4evidence from others who worked with the candidate
5records and correspondence
6their reflective practice journal.

Evidence Requirements
Evidence from Performance
As this unit has been drawn from the Training and Development Standards, the evidence requirements have been presented slightly differently.
The candidate’s package of evidence needs to cover all the performance criteria and all of the aspects of range in both of the elements of competence in this unit. Performance evidence is required for each element.
When coaching individual learners (element ZE4.1) the performance evidence must cover:
1coaching learners – the candidate should provide evidence of coaching at least two different learners, one of which should be observed.
2Identifying factors inhibiting learning.
Simulations would not be considered appropriate for this element.
When assisting individual learners to apply their learning (element ZE4.2) the performance evidence must cover:
1Notes on or explanation of the identification of opportunities for learners to apply their learning
2Rationale for opportunities and resources used
3Notes on or explanation of information given to learners.
For element ZE4.2 the candidate should provide evidence of assisting at least two different learners to apply their learning. Evidence from simulation should not form the major part of a candidate’s evidence for this element.
Evidence from Knowledge and Understanding
Candidates must demonstrate they know and understand the areas listed in the descriptions of knowledge and understanding within the unit. Much of their knowledge and understanding will be evident from their performance. Where the candidate’s knowledge and understanding is not evident from their performance, it may be necessary for additional evidence of knowledge and understanding to be provided.
Evidence should be gathered for all aspects of knowledge and understanding detailed either by inferring this from performance evidence or through the use of questions or case studies.
