The primary objectives of the Legal Intellectual Property (IP) group are to: 1) minimize the risk that Cardinal Health’s research and development initiatives might be seen to infringe third party intellectual property rights; 2) maximize the legal protections that Cardinal Health possesses as a result of its investment in research and development; and, 3) assess the value of third party IP rights in connection with technology partnerships/acquisitions.

Qualifications: 3L student with demonstrated interest in patent law. Undergraduate or graduate degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, bioengineering, chemistry, physics, biology, or closely related disciplines. 2L students will also be considered.

Typical Work and Projects Assigned: The extern will assist the IP team in managing the existing patent portfolio. This will include interfacing with inventors to obtain information needed to pursue patent protection for various Cardinal Health inventions; drafting patent applications; and responding to substantive communications from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The extern will also be asked to perform targeted patent research projects in various patent/IP databases, at various levels of depth, in view of information provided by product/marketing/R&D teams. The extern will analyze results of patent research and provide assessment to Cardinal IP counsel and to business unit teams, compile results of patent searches into meaningful (and understandable) “landscape” reports and provide guidance/feedback to business units.

Time Commitment: 15 hours per week. Days of the week flexible.

Law School Requirements for Academic Credit: Externs must be enrolled with the School of Law for course credit or serve as an extern on a non-compensated basis.
