BACKGROUND

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee’s purpose is to advise Council on the views, needs and interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoplesin the Parramatta area.

Role of the Committee

The Committee works with Council to:

provide advice, input and feedback to Councilon the needs & issues of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
provide advice, input and feedback on Council’s business and affairs relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples within the LGA including appropriate approaches for consultation with these communities
identify, promote and reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and culture
provide advice, input and feedback to Council on its work to promote an increased knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and society in the wider community

The Committee reports to Council through monthly Council Reports.

Membership

Membership of the Advisory Committee is voluntary and includes:

community members who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
a member of the Dharug people
community members who are representatives of local community organisations with a demonstrated commitment, sensitivity to and understanding of issues relating to the local Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In addition, the following are ex-officio members:

Parramatta City Councillors
Council staff from relevant departments

Selection Criteria

Committee members must be a minimum of 16 years old, and should meet both of the following key selection criteria:

All members must also live, work, study or have a strong commitment to the Parramatta LGA.
All members must demonstrate skills and capacity to contribute to the Committee.

All applicants will be assessed according to the above criteria, with a maximum of 12 people appointed as Members to the Committee.

A panel of three (3) Council staff will assess EOIs against the selection criteria.

Recommendations for the appointment of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee will be made to Council in December 2017.
