Code / PT118
Level / 4
Credit rating / 10
Pre-requisites / normal course entry requirements
Type of module / Extensive
Aims / 1. To provide the student with a knowledge of physiology
2. To explain the normal function of the human body, with emphasis on systems of particular importance to physiotherapy
3. To relate to other modules where a knowledge of physiology is essential for understanding, eg. pathophysiology and Applied Physiotherapy Skills.
Learning outcomes/objectives / On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
- describe and explain the dynamic relationship between the structure and function of the human body.
- explain how physiology relates to pathology .
- describe and explain the physiology of homeostasis, cell and tissue differentiation, muscle, neurophysiology, pain, exercise, the heart, circulatory system and respiration
Content /
- Homeostasis including feedback mechanisms
- Cell and tissue differentiation
- Protective mechanisms including blood clotting, general adaptation syndrome / stress response, sleep patterns
- Muscle Physiology
- Cardiovascular Physiology
- Respiration Physiology
- Neurophysiology
- Pain
Teaching and learning strategies / Lead lectures and supporting tutorials
Learning support / Background reading list supplied for initial sessions and overview of the digestive tract. Models for suitable areas e.g. heart, lungs and brain, CD-ROM for some areas e.g. muscle contraction. Student central as resource for lectures additional reading lists and cell workbook.
