COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed for instruction in applying the principles and elements of design when upholstering furniture and to create a unified design. Emphasis is placed on the use of appropriate fabrics, colors, textures, types of furniture, needs of customers, lifestyles, occupation, commercial or residential setting. Upon completion, a student should be able to identify elements of design and apply them to the principles of design in order to achieve a unified design which best suits the decor. NDC

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
MODULE DESCRIPTION – The purpose of this module is to teach the students advanced planning and layout techniques on complex styles of furniture. Topics include restyling a project, fabric and supply selection, charting/computing yardage, color schemes and designs, decorative trims, charting, materials lists, pattern construction, and cutting material according to the chart.

A1.0 Use advanced planning and layout techniques on complex styles of furniture. / A1.1 Redesign and layout a specified chair or sofa according to customer’s specifications and locale code requirements.

MODULE B –CONSTRUCTION
MODULE DESCRIPTION – The purpose of this module is to teach the students how to reconstruct a furniture piece. Topics include tearing down the piece, evaluating and repairing problems, installing padding and cushion, and recovering it.

B1.0 Reconstruct a furniture piece. / B1.1 Tear down furniture piece and reconstruct according to design.
Samples of Behavior:
- Remove all fabric from piece.
- Evaluate frame for serviceability. (Joints, braces, structurally sound)
- Add to frame as needed.
- Evaluate padding and spring needs.
- Repair or replace springs as needed.
- Install padding and cushion as needed.
- Cut material to fit pattern.
- Attach fabric to frame.
- Install decorative trim as required. / 3
