About ONE IN FIVE
On New Year’s Day 2001, a creative, intelligent young man named Matt Wardlaw succumbed to his mental illness. His pain had become so intolerable, he was driven to take his own life. Matt’s tragic yet all too common story inspired a group of his friends and family to come together and address one of Australia’s biggest health issues – mental illness.
This marked the formation of One In Five, a not-for-profit volunteer based organisation with the single minded focus on raising funds for medical research into better diagnosis and treatments for mental health. Now 16 years later, we are as committed as ever.
Our long term goal is to find a cure. When we lost Matt, we gained a mission – to turn One In Five into None In Five. Together with your help, we aim to reach our goal.
We believe in a future of early diagnosis, treatment and cures. Our challenge is that despite 20 percent of Australian’s suffering each year from mental health issues, medical research continues to be severely underfunded leaving medical knowledge 30 years behind most other common life threatening diseases such as Cancer, Heart Disease and Diabetes.
One in Five is partnering with some of Australia’s leading mental health research specialists to tackle the unanswered questions.
Success for us is positively changing the lives of those living with mental health issues by funding the best researchers to unlock the science that will enable sufferers to live healthy, happy and fulfilled lives.
Our structure:
One in Five is an Incorporated Association. We are a volunteer organisation
