Research Permits

Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI): Each applicant is required to pay an application fee of $1200 per person or 20% of the total budget, whichever is higher. The second option does not include return air tickets, vehicle hire or other capital investment.

Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH): Application fee is $50 and undergraduate research permit fees is $100.

CTA or if necessary, Residence Permit Class C:

Each expedition members has to acquire either a CTA (Carrying on Temporary Assignment) permit upon arrival or a class C resident permit, both of which cost $100. Assuming six expedition members are included in the project, this equates to a total of $600 or £382.30.

£424 per person via Emirates Airlines for 7 expedition members.

Subsistence (Accommodation and Food)£326.43

Accommodation

Campsite will be on eco2’s private land costing $10 per week, per person totalling $500 or £326.43.

Food

Food will be mainly prepared and delivered by a local chef hired by eco2 and meals are expected to cost between $3 and $7 per day. Each participant will pay for their own meal every day.

In-country Travel£629.80

Transport to Site Location

The six expedition members will travel by coach to Mnaida Street in Mtwara via in-country coaches i.e. Machinga line bus service or JM bus services from Julius Nyerere International Airport (8+ hours) and currently costs $15 or £9.56.Therefore coach travel will cost the team £114.72 to take and return participants to Julius Nyerere International Airport.

Dive Boat Fuel

Dive Boat includes 2 x 75hp Twin Outboard Engine. (0.50 specific fuel consumption x 150 horse power) / 6.1 fuel specific weight = 12.3 Gallons per Hour. Contacts advise a budget of £350 – £450 for Fuel Costs.

Locally Rented Dhow

If eco2 cannot lend the dive boat to the expedition members due to research, tourism or business obligations or if the expedition can save money on surveying further locations within the time period available, a locally rented dhow will be attained. Approximate cost to the owners would be a per diem of $20 a day. As tourism is highest during August, a total of $100 (currently £65.08) will be added to the budget.

DAN Sport Bronze insurance package will be used by all expedition participants at £41.10, totalling a cost of £246.60.

Medical / Health & Safety£3,430.55

Vaccinations

The NHS supplies hepatitis A vaccinations for free as well as vaccinations for cholera, typhoid and tetanus however they have recently made vaccinations for hepatitis B cost £90 unless the person has received a booster in the previous year. Yellow fever vaccinations cost £75 per person, tuberculous costs £60 per person and an injection to help with rabies virus costs £165 of which has been included as team members will be eating close to wild monkeys. The price for malaria medication (doxycycline) for each participant for 150 days will cost £39 making a grand total of £2574.00.

02 Kit

A Wennoll WS100 Rescue Kit will be included in every dive boat the team uses. This oxygen unit contains a 2 liter tank and complies with IATA Dangerous Good Regulations for carriage on aircraft.

The unit includes a method to absorb exhaled CO2 and release the exhaled O2 enabling a continuous flow of 02 for an average of 7.5 hours. This enables the team to use the decompression chamber in Zanzibar that obliges to DAN guidelines and is part of the SSS Recompression Network, rather than the nearest privately owned decompression chamber in Northern Mozambique.
