EXPECTATIONS FOR SCHOLASTIC READING COUNTS
Dear Parents and Students,
The majority of your child’s homework in language arts involves reading Scholastic Reading Counts (SRC) books. All students are required to read two chapter books in their Lexile reading range each nine weeks. Students must successfully pass a SRC quiz for each book with a minimum score of 80%. Students will have two attempts and only two to pass the quiz for each book. Students who have passed the quizzes for both chapter books with an 80% or greater will receive a grade of a 100% for the nine weeks for this assignment.
While all students must read two chapter books, students’ goals will vary. Consequently, after reading two required chapter books for a grade, students may have to read additional books to meet their goal and receive the reward. After reading two chapter books, students may read nonfiction books and/or additional chapter books according to their Lexile reading range to meet their goal.
Reading SRC books is often the only independent reading students are asked to complete in the middle school. Even information from textbooks is often read in class. It is important that students learn independence in reading as they will be left on their own to read large amounts of information in high school. Please, encourage and ask your child about their reading at home. Every child should come home daily with their SRC book.
It is my recommendation that your child read on average, 15 pages a night. It is important that as a middle school student your child take responsibility for making good decisions about the books they choose and the time he/she spends reading. Students will create a schedule where they make decisions about what they plan to read by certain deadlines. By reading 20-30 minutes several nights a week and over the weekend, students should have no problem in meeting their SRC goals by the end of a nine week period.
Thank You,
Sam Northern
