Director of Zoological Conservation and Education (October 2004 – May 2011)
This position oversees the company’s conservation and education efforts, including zoological revenue, guest experience and conservation partner programs. This position is responsible for revenue generation in excess of $35 million through conservation education programming and connecting visitors with experiences that enhance their conservation identity. This position is also responsible for over $1 million in fundraising annually for conservation efforts.
Key accomplishments and responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning: Develop zoological strategic plans companywide, including animal sustainability plans, conservation strategy, and education and conservation vision, mission and goals. Integrate strategic plans within other functional areas including Merchandise, Culinary, and Operations.
- Revenue Growth and Budgeting: Grow zoological revenue and profit by 6-10% annually. Implemented “New Revenue” meeting to increase innovation and development of new revenue sources. Manage zoological budgets in excess of $35 million in revenue and $20 million in expense and labor.
- Exhibit Design: Led zoological design team for creation of Jungala, Cheetah Run and the Animal Care Center. Jungala, a $50 million capital project included children’s play area, dining and entertainment venues and tiger and orangutan animal exhibits. The $8 million Animal Care Center is the most innovative zoological hospital developed in the U.S. and includes comprehensive viewing by the public.
- Fundraising: Serve on Board of Directors of SeaWorld &Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, responsible for raising $1 million annually. Chaired Wildnight, raising over $500,000 for the Fund, and chaired First Annual Golf Classic. Manage relationships with Pepsi, Coca-Cola and American Express as corporate donors to the Fund.
- Zoological Management: Look after a corporate-wide team of over 400 employees. Developed and implemented career ladder and succession plan.
- Communications: Serves as spokesperson for education and conservation messages with appearances on local, regional and national television programs including The Today Show. Co-host of Adventure Camp, a national television series broadcast on Discovery Kids and the BBC. Executive Producer of Emmy-winning Saving a Species series. National and International public speaker with keynote addresses at British Isles Association of Zoos and Aquariums, London Zoological Society, Asian Zoo Educators Association and European Aquarium and Zoo Association.
- Partnership Development: Implemented partnership program with National Geographic Society, World Wildlife Fund, the Nature Conservancy and National Wildlife Federation resulting in national media attention and promotion of park in organization publications. Developing book series with American Humane Association and Chicken Soup for the Soul to further animal welfare efforts.
- External Leadership: Served on the boards of the Zoo Conservation Outreach Group (ZCOG), International Zoo Educators Association (IZE) and served as Co-Chair on the Trends Committee for the Association for Zoos and Aquariums. Senior Director for Education Programs (January 2000-October 2004)
The National Wildlife Federation is the nation's largest member-supported conservation education and advocacy group, uniting people from all walks of life to protect nature, wildlife and the world we all share. Reported directly to the Senior Vice President and served as Acting Senior Vice President as needed. With an operational budget of $5 million and a staff of fifty dispersed across ten regional offices, I oversaw all public education and conservation outreach to youth (0-18) for the corporation and subsidiaries.
Key accomplishments and responsibilities:
- Developed Education Strategic Plan, resulting in the most significant expansion of education efforts in the company’s history. Established multi-tiered criteria process to identify most critical communities in need of programming throughout United States.
- Managed complex budget with multiple revenue streams. Successfully fundraised from corporate, foundation, cause-related marketing and individual gifts in excess of $2 million annually. Developed and stewarded relationship with several foundations including Walton Family Foundation, Wege Foundation, and the Ball Foundation.
- Streamlined and automated operations saving the organization $1 million annually.
- Expertise in evaluation design. Developed evaluation matrix to measure social, financial and behavioral return on investment for education and conservation programs.
- Education programs liaison to Board of Directors and responsible for Board deployment to education events. Identified and cultivated potential new Board members.
- Designed programs and trained staff on non-profit management, customer service, campaign and strategic planning, learning pedagogies and fundraising.
- Launched first children's television initiative in company's history, bolstering subscriptions to Ranger Rick, Your Big Backyard and Wild Animal Baby in excess of 1.2 million monthly readers and generating nearly $100,000 in video sales in first quarter.
- Published 10 new nature curriculum, including the first curriculum for engaging children with disabilities in nature activities.
- Launched and supervised the volunteer program which, in three years, included over 300 active volunteers and saved the organization over $400,000 annually.
Aquarium of the Pacific Long Beach, CA
Manager of Education (May, 1997 – January, 2000)
The Aquarium of the Pacific opened in 1997 as the premiere aquatic facility in southern California. Over two million diverse and multi-lingual people visit the aquarium annually, with over 250,000 students visiting on field trips. This position reported directly to the Vice President of Education and was responsible for all facets of the education program, including program development, marketing, operations, partnerships and evaluation.

John G. Shedd Aquarium is one of the country's largest and oldest aquariums. As Outreach Coordinator, I created the aquarium’s first outreach program, designed to increase support for the aquarium within the local Chicagoland community. As Distance Learning Coordinator, I created the first strategic operational plan for the use of technology in education.
Sea World of Florida, Education Orlando, FL
Science Writer/Instructor/Community Relations Manager (May, 1992 – June, 1995)
Sea World of Florida is the world's largest marine life park dedicated to a mission of entertainment, education, conservation and research. As Science Writer and Instructor, I oversaw all of the education program development in the nation's largest full-time Education Department within an accredited zoo or aquarium. With a staff of 100 and an operational budget in excess of $3.5 million, the department was responsible for general park education, youth programs, summer camps, teacher training, and publications reaching over 4 million guests annually.
