PRESS RELEASE

THE MOOR OF VENICE RETURNS TO STRATFORD-UPON-AVON FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2007

Tread the Boards Theatre Company in celebration of the 450th Birthday of William Shakespeare present his dark and brooding tragedy, Othello the Moor of Venice.

Othello marries Desdemona without her father’s knowledge and incurs his wrath. Meanwhile Iago is enraged that the younger Michael Cassio has been promoted to Lieutenant over him. Iago makes it his mission to destroy the Moor by planting seeds of suspicion, jealousy and envy in the mind of Othello leading him down a road to destruction and despair.

Perhaps the darkest of Shakespeare’s tragedies, it has not been performed in Stratford-upon-Avon since the Complete Works season at the RSC in 2007 and makes a return to The Attic Theatre at The Lazy Cow (formerly known as Cox’s Yard) in the title role local actor Nick Doughlin tackles his first ever Shakespeare play and plays opposite Tread the Boards own John-Robert Partridge as the villainous Iago and Rebecca Bell returns to Stratford-upon-Avon having played Christine in Phantom of the Opera last October.

The show opens on Friday 25th April, the eve of the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations and runs through until the 4th May with a special weekend production taking place during the Stratford Arts Festival.

Catherine Prout, the Producer who also plays Emilia said ‘It is incredibly exciting and a great challenge to tackle such a well-known play that hasn’t been performed for so long, it is such an exciting time with all the celebrations connected with Shakespeare going on and we wanted to join in the festivities with this fantastic piece of work’.
