COACHING TO

EXCELLENCE COURSE

INTRODUCTION

Coaching has always existed in human communities. Whenever someone wished to pass along accumulated wisdom or practical know-how in a way that left the recipient competent and engaged in learning, coaching was present.

Our contemporary South Africa is full of rapid and often frightening changes in which no one can predict which technologies, institutions or organizations will flourish and which will fade. There is little time for theoretical discussion, yet people must quickly make decisions, allocate resources, rapidly adapt and stay highly competent. Simultaneously, these same people need a sense of purpose and meaning. That’s where Coaching has a role.

Coaches build competence, foster personal fulfillment and open up possibilities, by drawing upon the knowledge of what’s unchanging about human life and taking into account that which is particular about our times. Coaches are people who pass along accumulated practical wisdom. To be practical, the coaching must be accessible and customised; to be wise, it must be solidly grounded: biologically, philosophically, sociologically, spiritually and historically.

The Centre for Coaching links into 25 years of cutting edge coaching course development and experience offered through alliance with New Ventures West in San Francisco providing access to international accreditation and practices.

Coaching is truly a skill for the new millennium. This Coaching To Excellence course is a seminal course laying the foundations for the six month and year long programmes offered and creates a base for the life-long learning process on how to master this competence.

Up to now, people who have sought to develop a coaching competence have had to travel offshore to acquire this skill. Now, through a dynamic partnership between New Ventures West and Coaching Matters (Pty) Ltd, the ability to access world-class coach training has been made possible. This partnership has resulted in the creation of the Centre for Coaching (Pty) Ltd.

New Ventures West, founded in 1986, is a San Francisco based organisation dedicated to making people both effective and fulfilled in their work as coaches. They primarily offer programs focusing on developing people as coaches in a variety of contexts.

Coaching Matters is one of South Africa’s most eminent professional one-on-one coaching organisations and offers coaching services aimed at designing processes and structures that foster excellence, innovation and enhanced performance.

Coaching to Excellence is part of a series of coaching courses offered by the Centre for Coaching at The GraduateSchool of Business, University of Cape Town, through the Executive Management Education Programmes.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Coaching To Excellence is a two-day workshop in which participants are introduced to the principles and methods of coaching, while gaining experience and insights they can apply in their own working situations.

Participants explore what's needed to evoke long-term excellence in others' performance. They examine qualities required of a coach: qualities such as patience, discipline, and the ability to build relationships; to listen to and inspire others; clarity and rigor in their own observations; and responsibility, imagination and creativity in working and dealing with colleagues and staff.

The workshop provides a foundation for participants to develop their own ability as coaches in identifying and resolving problems, opening new perspectives and horizons on the job, and designing practices with and for others through which they elevate their level of performance over time.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE COURSE?

In the Coaching To Excellence course, you'll not only hear the lecturer addressing the nature and methods of coaching; you'll work individually with other participants in "trying on" the roles of coach and client. Through structured exercises, case studies and simulations, you'll discover what's needed to intervene effectively in typical situations faced by managers and professionals each day.

Additionally, you'll have the occasion to work with partners on "problem" situations from your own work experience. You'll be coached not just to resolve the problem, but to coach others in a way that allows them to succeed.

RESULTS THE COURSE WILL PRODUCE

While gaining skill as a coach takes time, study and practice, this two-day workshop allows you to accomplish key results:

•You'll experience and assess your own ability towork and relate with others, leaving them moreproductive, more accountable, and more satisfiedwith their outputs.

•You'll gain new clarity on the problems andobstacles that impede progress which could bedecisively altered by the action of a skillful coach.

•You'll understand what coaching is in a way thatopens new possibilities for effective interactions inyour work and your life.
