II.The Work Plan

Please thoroughly answer the following questions. Program dates are May 29/June 11 - August 16.

  1. Is your organization a TDA approved summer meals site or sponsor?
  1. How long has your organization participated in a summer meals program?
  1. In one paragraph, tell us why you feel your organization would be a good fit for a summer associate and how they can help meet the needs and goals of your organization for the summer.
  1. Does your organization have a staff member dedicated to working with the summer meals program?
  1. Describe your plan for orientation/training for a summer associate.
  1. Would use of a vehicle be required to successfully complete the proposed work plan? If so, please describe your plans for providing transport for the Summer Associate. Or would your organization be willing to reimburse mileage for the Summer Associate’s personal car?
  1. Please list the options for housing the Summer Associate(s). Include addresses and phone numbers of hosts.
  1. What is the job title and responsibilities of the summer associate’s Supervisor? Does their position allow time for guidance of the Summer Associate?
  1. In order for us to ensure a good/full experience for the summer associates, please review the “Project Goals and Activities” table on the following page and provide a detailed description/plan of how the summer associate will be able to accomplish these goals.

Activity 1: Increase enrollment and participation in the Summer Food Service Program.
Activity 2: Create or enhance curriculum and enrichment activities for participating youth.
Activity 3: Recruit volunteers to assist in the implementation and maintenance of the program.
Activity 4: Develop funds to support Summer Food Service Program efforts.

Terms, Conditions and Benefits

Terms and Conditions include:

  • No outside employment
  • Enrollment in classes equivalent to 6 credit hours requires approval from program coordinator; greater than 6 credit hours not permitted
  • Governed by the Hatch Act and other legislative pieces applicable to AmeriCorps VISTA members pertaining to political, labor and religious activities
  • Must work a minimum of 40 hours per week for entire duration of program, whether eight or ten week term; VISTA members do not determine their length of participation in the program. This should be predetermined with host site and NYCCAH.

Benefits of becoming an AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate member:

Associates are eligible to receive:

  • A $1,174.60 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or a $125/mo summer end-of service stipend
  • On-site orientation and training
  • A living allowance to cover necessities during service
  • Involvement in the AmeriCorps VISTA Alumni Network and eCommunity

Associates do not receive:

  • Health care
  • Life insurance
  • Child care allowances
  • Relocation allowances
  • Sick or personal/vacation time - holidays are allowable as days off

Site Responsibilities

Site agrees to:

  • assist in finding housing for the summer associate
  • actively assist THI and NYCCAH in following up with candidates in additional paperwork needs
  • provide members with necessary equipment to complete tasks outlined in VAD/s
  • provide daily supervision to members
  • reimburse or provide travel arrangements for travel performed on behalf of your organization
  • when given notice of final reporting guidelines, provide timely submission of report
  • ensure each VISTA member works at least 40 hours per week, or an appropriate amount of hours for weeks with less than 5 working days
  • provide and discuss Terms, Conditions and Benefits with potential candidates; direct questions to THI
  • notify THI of issues or challenges concerning members, whether internal to the organization or external with other agencies/communities
  • provide a detailed discussion surrounded host site policies/procedures and any employee handbook and ensure all members understand and follow said procedures
  • not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, political belief, marital status, age, or sexual orientation

General Eligibility

  • Summer Associates must be at least 18 years of age at the time of placement
  • Be a U.S. Citizen, National or Legal Resident
  • Able to commit and serve on a full-time basis for 8 – 10 weeks
  • Not listed on the National Sex Offenders Public Registry
