Job Description for Head of Key Stage 1

The above position is responsible to the Headmaster through the Deputy Head Pastoral) and Deputy Head (Academic)

The Key Tasks

The key tasks of a member of the senior management team are to provide leadership and management of the key stage team.

Core purpose

To ensure that the progress of all children, irrespective of academic ability is the main focus for the staff team

Main Responsibilities

·  Strategic direction and development of the team

·  Teaching and learning

·  Leading and managing staff

·  Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources

·  Communication with parents

Strategic direction and development of the team

·  Develop a strategic view for the key stage which supports the vision, ethos and policies of the school

·  Support the creation and implementation of the school development plan, especially as it relates to the key stage and to take responsibility for appropriately delegated aspects of it

·  Use National, Local and school management data effectively, to monitor standards across the key stage

·  Monitor the progress made towards achieving key stage plans and targets and use the information to plan future developments

·  Ensure that parents are well informed about the curriculum, targets, children’s progress and attainment within the key stage

Teaching and learning

·  Be responsible for the care of pupils within the key stage, promoting self discipline and positive behaviour in accordance with school policy

·  Take responsibility for the development and monitoring of the curriculum provision throughout the key stage, liaising appropriately with subject leaders, class teachers and previous and subsequent key stage or year group managers

·  Support the Head and Deputy Heads in the monitoring of the quality of teaching and learning across the key stage, including the analysis of performance data

·  Establish a partnership with parents to involve them in their child’s learning

·  Celebrate student achievement and promote the values of the school through the planned leadership of assemblies as appropriate

Leading and Managing staff

·  Support the Head and Deputy Heads in developing positive working relationships with and between all pupils and staff in the key stage

·  Organise the various duty and cover needs as required

·  Lead groups of staff in developmental activities and evaluate the effectiveness of the training

·  Support the performance management process as required and use it to develop personal and professional effectiveness

·  Ensure newly qualified and staff new to the school receive appropriate induction and support

·  Work with the SENCO to ensure that individual pupils receive appropriate support

·  Ensure that the Head and Deputies are well informed about key stage policies, plans and priorities, the success in meeting objectives and targets and key stage -related continuing professional development plans

Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources

·  Ensure the effective and efficient management of general resources for the key stage by setting in place appropriate procedures for auditing and storage

Communication with Parents

·  Ensure that parents are kept informed of all events, as necessary

·  Organising and arrange regular functions such as assemblies, Parents’ Evenings, Sports Day and Productions

·  Deal directly with parents as required

Salary

The salary for this position will be paid on the Leadership scale in the range 1-7.
