College Trig

Exam 2 ReviewExam Date: October 16th, 2008

Chapter 6 Sections 6.1 – 6.8

Chapter 7 Sections 7.1 – 7.8 (skip 7.6)

Chapter 6 (Review Items)

  • Know the unit circle and how to use it to evaluate trig functions.
  • Be able to convert angles to and from radians and degrees.
  • Be able to graph any of the 6 trig functions (yes, this does mean tan, csc, sec, and cot … hint hint wink wink).
  • Be able to identify amplitude, period, phase shift, and vertical shift on functions like: y = -3sin(2x+7)-5 (you may need to factor inside the sine or cosine)
  • Be able to write a trig function from data:

Example: given amp, period, ps, and vs write the equation

Example: given a max and a min on a wave, write the equation.

  • Given information about an angle, be able to draw the picture and find the other trig function.
  • Suggested Review: Go back over Exam 1 (especially problems 6 – 11), go back over the water wheel / alien / pendulum problems, go over any problems in the chapter review (p694) that are similar to Exam 1

Chapter 7

Section 7.1 (inverses)

  • Be able to recognize the graphs of sin-1x, cos-1x, and tan-1x. You will not need to graph these by hand, but matching is not out of the question.
  • No where the inverse trig functions make sense.
  • Be able to evaluate compound expressions with inverses.

For example: sin(cos-1(-1))

  • Suggested Review: P712: #12-55odd

Section 7.2 (more inverses)

  • Be able to work with the inverses of cosecant and secant.
  • Be able to use your calculator to find inverses.
  • Suggested Review: p718: #9 – 55 odd

Section 7.3 (trig identities)

  • Know the identities on page 720 by heart.
  • You will need to be able to factor, find common denominators, and add and subtract fractions appropriately with trig functions.
  • Be able to establish identities similar to (but obviously not the same as) p725 #21, 29, 31, 41, 42, 61.

Section 7.4 (sum and difference formulas)

  • Know how to use the sum and difference formulas to prove identities and evaluate trig expressions.
  • Suggested Review: p735 #9 – 29 odd, AND 31, AND 33, and 39-47odd

Section 7.5 (double and half angle formulas)

  • Know how to use these formulas
  • Suggested Review: p744-745 #7 – 27 odd

Sections 7.7 and 7.8 (solving trig equations)

  • You will need to be able to factor, find common denominators, and add and subtract fractions appropriately with trig functions.
  • There are tons of variations of these problems, but the main idea is that you will need to find ALL of the answers to a given equation in an interval.
  • Factoring is usually one of the best tools you have … practice it.
  • Suggested Review: p754 #7 – 25odds, p763 #5 – 33odds

There is also a practice test on blackboard. Remember that there will be chapter 6 review questions on the exam as well. Don’t forget about them.
