European Symposium is a key event for IHA members

The EU Symposium to be held in Paris from November 9th -12th is a key event that you cannot afford to miss.

The theme of the symposium, which takes place on Thursday, November 10th, will be “What is Europe Today?” It will identify such problem areas currently under discussion as Turkey, enlargement, European Constitution and how is it all financed?

National abilities against European skills, European Directives above national laws and how Europe helps each country are among the other subjects on the agenda.

On November 9th, the day before the symposium, there will be a managing committee meeting at 3pm at the CFQ headquarters.

On Friday, November 11th, which is a French public holiday, there will be a complimentary visit to the Paris BATIMAT exhibition, where there will be a reception. Coach transport will be provided.

A tour to the Palace of Versailles on Saturday, November 12th, with a farewell dinner for participants back in Paris on Saturday evening, will round off what is sure to be a valuable and memorable occasion.

Venue for the event has now been confirmed as the prestigious and centrally located Hilton Hotel, Arc de Triomphe, 51-57 rue de Courcelles, 75008 Paris.

IHA members, especially association managers, international representatives and Presidents are urged to attend this, the first major initiative under the chairmanship of Olivier Blondet.

An early indication of your interest would be appreciated – please contact Jonathan Swift or Sheila Goodson at the BHF Group – for contact details see page 4.

Successful launch for Asia-Pacific

Sourcing

The first Asia-Pacific Sourcing fair in Cologne for Asian products in the house, garden and leisure segments was a hit with exhibitors and visitors.

From 27 February to 1 March 546 manufacturers and retail companies from 15 countries exhibited hardware/DIY, garden and ambience products in an overall exhibition area of 32 000 m2.

More than 7 000 trade visitors from approximately 60 countries were registered, over two-thirds of them from abroad. According to a visitor survey 21 per cent of those attending were from the retail trade, 38 per cent were engaged in wholesale and foreign trade and 25 per cent came from industry. (For further details see page 5).

UK Show Postponed

The premiere of the UK industry show Exclusively DIY, which was to open its doors for the first time this June, is being postponed until next year according to the organiser, the BHHMA.

The poor financial climate in the UK DIY sector was cited as the reason for the postponement.

Association members are facing declining sales in the DIY trade, growing pressure on margins and cost increases.

“Wow Factor” for 2009 Congress

Plans are now well in hand to give the IHA 2009 Centenary Congress the “wow factor” to ensure it is an exceptional event.

A meeting of the Congress Committee at BHF headquarters in Birmingham on March 8th agreed to go ahead on the basis that the best location for the Congress would be London in September 2009.

A leading professional conference organiser has been thoroughly briefed and will be submitting his recommendations within the next few weeks regarding suitable venues, timing and duration of the event, and the business and social programme.

In addition to three half day business sessions, a theme night and gala banquet, Congress visitors will have the chance to visit the internationally acclaimed Garden & Leisure Equipment Exhibition in Birmingham. There will also be a range of excursions.

US to welcome Canadian retailers

Following the recent and unexpected demise of the Canadian Retail Hardware Association, there is news that the National Retail Hardware Association is in the process of changing its name to the North American Hardware Association (NRHA) to reflect the inclusion of Canadian retailers.

In the January issue of Do-It-Yourself Retailing (USA), John P. Hammond wrote”… we have always said that if our association folded its tent it wouldn’t take long for someone to start another one. Well, that’s what NRHA is attempting to do for the approximately 1,700 Canadian hardware and home improvement retailers who belong to the CRHA.”

NRHA is working to provide a package of Internet-based electronic services to Canadian retailers either on a direct basis or through a low-cost, high value group membership program through Canadian programmed distributors.

“The loss of CRHA should give every retailer cause for reflection,” says Hammond. “Independent hardware and home improvement retailers need an independent voice to speak for them and to them. Once the voice is no more, the silence is deafening.”
