Finnish and Estonian Pupils and Students Interview EU Ministers
As part of the European Council meeting in Helsinki, on Friday, 10th
December, 1999, Mrs. Nicole Fontaine, President of the European Parliament,
will open a questions & answers session using videoconference. Finnish and
Estonian pupils and students will discuss in English with ministers from
the European Union countries about topics such as EU enlargement, the
Balkan crisis and what has EU to offer for the youth.
The discussions will be webcasted realtime (RealAudio) on Friday, 10th
December 1999, at 10 - 12 (GMT+2), on the Finnish presidency site:

CoMuNet WebRing Project
The Comenius Multimedia Thematic Network (CoMuNet) project started in June
1998 with the objective of setting up and animating a Thematic Network
which would link Comenius projects, mainly European Educational Projects of
Action 1, involved in multimedia and ICT.
CoMuNet 2000 is going to build upon the activities of the initial phase and
expand the Thematic Network to an On-line Community by promoting a wide
range of activities that will include:
- Dissemination of ICT tools for collaborative work
- Promotion of innovative use of ICT in project work
- Seminars and Courses for project co-ordinators
Two new activities have just been launched: the EuroCoMuNet WebRing and a
mailing for Comenius co-ordinators.

Protecting Children on the Internet Questionnaire
As a teacher do you have problems explaining to children that the Internet
contains hazards as well as benefits? Childnet International is currently
researching the best ways to communicate safety messages to children
through the Netaware project. An easy-to-use online questionnaire has been
set up in four languages to gather feedback about what styles of messages,
logos, leaflets and websites you think would work best.

Water Quality and Environment, France
The French "Maison de l'Environnement" is organising a special European
Primary Schools meeting starting on May 8, 2000. The event will take place
in Dunkirk, Northern France, the topic will be "Water Quality and
Environment", the children involved should be about 10 years old.
They are looking for schools located around the North Sea, preferably in
France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. Virtual preparatory meetings
will help them to get to know each other.

Millennium Calendar, ESP
The Millennium Calendar has been launched thanks to the contributions of
many schools where children expressed their hopes, aspirations and
predictions for the New Millennium. This calendar works like an Advent
Calendar. On each day leading up to the end of the millennium you can open
a new link to the contributions made by schools in a country.

Two teachers from a junior high school in Vantaa near Helsinki, Finland
(age group 14-15), would like to set up an email exchange to learn about

Thoughts about Sweden, Sweden (!)
A group of teachers from Gunneboskolan, Lund, South of Sweden will very
soon start a project with 13 year old students who will present different
areas of today's Sweden. If students are interested, let
them take a look at it and answer the questions. They are looking for

Carmen Acosta teaches Spanish in a French secondary school (age group
15-17). She would like to work on Artists and their work with European
teachers of Spanish or Spanish teachers within the framework of the This is

Environmental Email Exchange Project, Sweden
A team of four primary school classes and six teachers in Stockholm,
Sweden, are looking for e-mail partners class groups aged 8-13. They are
starting an environmental project year 2000 and they are interested in
exchanging mails with children from different parts of the world around
environmental issues.

IT Strategy Cultural Project, Sweden
This school is situated in Orebro, Sweden, age group 13-15. They would
like, via e-mail, to get in touch with young Europeans for an interchange

Email Exchange Leading to Real Exchange, Russia
A school from Saint Petersburg, Russia is looking for a partner to set up
an email exchange leading to a real exchange taking place between Spring
and Summer 2000. The partner should have a good knowledge of email
software, English for communication and cross-cultural differences as the
project will be prepared entirely via email. Age group : 16-20.

Teachers from Israel are looking for schools in Europe who can tell them
about birds that fly South in Winter and back to nest in the Summer, like
storks.

Planet Friendship, IEARN Slovenia
''We must be the change we wish to see in the World'' (Gandhi)…this phrase
is the inspiration of this project which invites pupils to take part in the
writing of a friendship declaration. The site proposes activities, essays
and also a penpal club.

To participate in the project, you select curriculum related topics with
your pupils (age group 14-16), ask them to write articles in French and
send the corrected texts to the co-ordinator who will then put them online
in the form of a newspaper.

This environmental project will run a set of four activities about what can
be done to preserve our planet: discussion for every event connected to
the environmental calendar, on-going discussions about everyday
environmental issues, topic oriented discussions and art contributions.

______
Vote Project, Japan
"Vote" will be a globally based World Wide Web project, and will seek
participation from as wide a geographic distribution of children and
schools as possible. Participants from all over the world will be given the
opportunity to express their opinions on the most impressive event or
person of the 20th century, what they desire looking towards the 21st century.
Discussions will take the form of a World Wide Web chain relay, which will
start from Japan and end in Australia, by way of Asia, Europe, Africa,
North America, South America, and Oceania. Children aged 7 to 18 from each
participating country will have an assigned period of time to add their
input to the correspondence chain before passing the "baton" to the next
country.

Peace Flag Competition, United Nations
A very exciting arts project from the CyberSchoolBus!
The Cyberschoolbus is the students' and teachers' website of the United
Nations. Their new project is called the "Peace Flag Project", which is an
art project for students aged 6 to 18. Students are asked to draw and
submit their version of what a world peace flag might look like.
The winning design will be made into a stamp by the UNPA (United Nations
Postal Administration)!

"Soft Qui Peut" Competition, France
The contest will reward the best achievements in data-processing by young
people (taking part individually or in groups) aged under 25 who have not
yet completed their third year in post school education and who do not
carry on a professional activity in the production presented.
Applications will have to be in by September 15 2000 and the names of the
candidates will be issued from October 30 2000 onward. Applications will
have to include a detailed description of the products and hardware needed.

International Prize for Literature, Spain
St. Paul's School, Barcelona, Spain, is holding the third St. Paul's School
International Prize for Literature in three languages: English, Spanish and
Catalan (closing date for receipt of entries 10th January 2000).
This contest is open to participants throughout the world born between
01.01.82 and 31.12.87, and there is either the set theme of "Peace" or a
free choice of theme.
