Sample Submission Procedure
The Facility accepts samples from any institution. Investigators are strongly encouraged to discuss their project prior to sample submission with the Facility Director, Dr. Bill Stone (423-439-8762) or the Lab Manager, Marianne Brannon (423-439-6230). Please notify us prior to your sample submission and expect receipt conformation. If receipt has not been acknowledged for more than three days, please contact us.
The cost of each band/spot for gel destaining, reduction, alkylation, trypsin digestion, liquid chromatography (LC), and mass spectrometry identification is $100 per band or protein spot. Any Coomassie-stained protein band or spot (that can be detected visually) contains sufficient material for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. The gel should be soaked in 10% acetic acid (destaining solution), with all excess liquid poured off . An image of the gel should be taken. The submitter should then excise the bands/ spots of interest and submit each band/spot in a separate tube to the Proteomics Facility at ETSU. An image of the gel should also be sent. The tubes should be sent in a box or cushioned envelope at room temperature by mail to our postal address (shown below).
Please label each sample submission (i.e., #1 for sample #1; #2 for sample #2, etc.) and include the Genus and species for each sample. Provide contact information of name, e-mail address and phone number in case we need to ask questions prior to sample processing and to send the final report.
The turnaround time (from the day your sample is received by us until the day you have our report) may vary from 3 to 12 days (depends on our waiting list). In general, samples are processed within 2-3 days, and software analysis/report is done within 1-2 days. If no peptides are observed in the digest then the customer is notified immediately via e-mail and explanation provided.
