Sorority Prayer

Oh Lord, our Heavenly Father, we come to thank Thee for the blessings Thou has bestowed upon us. We ask Thee to be our shield of protection and to make our lives such that they may be examples for others to follow. Help us at all times to be kind and honest, and to do those things which are pleasing in Thy sight. All of these things we ask in Thy name.

CALL TO ORDER

MINUTES AND CORRESPONDENCE

A. Minutes - The February 2014 minutes were accepted without corrections.

B. Correspondence - All of the mail received was for the Scholarship Committee.

OFFICERS’ REPORTS

A.  Basileus -

1. Soror Bryan passed around the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award that the chapter received from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

2. Soror Bryan made a correction to the agenda under New Business. Game Changer now “B” and Zetas Have Heart is now “C”.

B. Tamias – Soror Alexander reported that she would deposit Mardi Gras money today. As of March 7, 2014:

Checking: $12,553.41

Savings: $10,446.02

Seed Money: $5,946.02

C. Tamias Grammateus – Soror Faulkner asked that if Sorors have not paid their dues, then do so as soon as possible. Monies collected: $7,940 from February 6 – March 5, 2014. This includes money collected from Chapter Dues $1550; 40th Gala Tickets $160; MLK Breakfast $30; Mardi Gras $6200.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

A.  Amenities -

1.  Sorors Marzo, Tate, Townsel, Woods, and Wilson, birthdays were recognized for the month of March.

2.  Zeta Anniversaries for March were recognized for Sorors Champagne, Hooks, and Tate. Special recognition was given to the following Sorors for their service: Soror Bruce for 16 years, Soror Bryan for 21 years, Soror Tate-Souvenir for 21 years, and Soror Owens for 26 years.

3.  A Get Well card was sent to Soror Jones as she recovered from an auto accident.

4.  Chapter Shirts – Coupons were mailed to purchase chapter shirts. Mostly like the shirts will be ¾ sleeve and bottom down. Soror Bryan stated that if a Soror owes money, they would not be able to get a shirt. Every financial chapter member will receive a shirt. The shirts samples should be ready by the April Chapter Meeting.

B.  Intake and Reclamation -

1. Intake. There are about 15 ladies on the interest list and eight have been active in the last six months. Within the last few months, four or five have been consistent. Soror Jones would like for all members to get to know these ladies as much as they can. Next month the committee will start planning for Open House, which is scheduled for June.

2. Reclamation. The committee is beginning to plan a new fellowship. More details to follow.

C.  ZHOPE -

1. Events since last chapter meeting: February 25, 2014, March For Babies Kick Off at Buffalo Wild Wings; Sunday Supper Program at the Children’s Inn/NIH, March 2, 2014, where Sorors prepared chicken, vegetables, salad, a potato bar, and a variety of desserts to feed sick children and their families; and the March 2014 Maryland Adopt-A-School Initiative where the chapter donated $500 to support a library at Choptank Elementary.

2. Upcoming in March, April, and May: April 5, 2014, 10-12 pm, Self Defense Workshop: Krav Maga, at East County Community Center; April 19, 2014, 12-4 pm, AAHP Community Day, Montgomery College, Charlene R. Nunley Student Center; March For babies Walk, April 24, 2014, 10:00 am, Washingtonian Center, 209 Boardwalk Place, Gaithersburg, MD 20850; May 24, 2014, 10:45 am – 1:15 pm, So Others May Eat (SOME) Lunch; and Veteran’s Program, June 7, 2014, the Vietnam Veteran’s Chapter 641 in Silver Spring.

3. New Business. The committee has completed the matrix of the chapter initiatives. The count is 44. The committee needs Sorors to participate in the St. Jude’s Sunday of Hope Initiative.

4. Adopt-A-School. The students will be finishing their books in March and they will be sent to the publisher. In the 3rd Quarter, there will be a pizza party and a Teacher Appreciation.

5. Elder Care Initiative – The committee will be looking at starting a partnership with a Alzheimer Center: Sunrise of Silver Spring. Soror Corujo will be meeting with the director later this month to schedule a volunteer activity in April. Suggested activities are hand massages and art therapy. The exact date will be provided at a later date. May is Senior Citizen Month. The Elder Care committee will close out the year with An Elder Abuse Seminar in May at Arcola. The details will be provided at the April meeting.

D. Youth – There is no Youth Meeting scheduled today. On February 8, 2014, the youth volunteered at the Randolph Nursing Home playing bingo with the elders and the younger youth made hearts. Three Youth girls attend the 5th Annual Choose Respect Montgomery Teen Dating Conference at Montgomery College, Cultural Arts Center, Takoma Park, Maryland. The older youth are invited to participate in the Krav Maga Self Defense Workshop on April 5, 2014. The Youth will hold their Career Panel Workshop on May 17, 2014. Scheduled to attend the workshop are two career women, a pilot and a police officer. There will be interactive and hands-on training during the event.

E. PHC -

1. The monthly meeting was held on Thursday, March 6, 2014 and was hosted by our chapter. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 3, 2014, at 7:30 pm and is hosted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Montgomery Alumnae Chapter.

2. Upcoming Events: Game Changer, March 29, 2014; Cheeburger Cheeburger Fundraiser, May 15, 2014; and Plan of Action Meeting, June 5, 2014.

3. Announcements: DCNPHC March Madness Happy Hour, March 18, 2014; NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner, April 27, 2014; Kappa’s Two Person Golf Tournament, May 2, 2014; and AKA, Omega Omega Chapter, A Raisin In the Sun Theater Trip, May 31, 2014.

F. Amicae - Amicae meeting will be held today at East County Community College from 1pm-3pm. The Valentine’s Day Party was a success! Four Amicae are scheduled to attend the State Conference. Four Amicae will graduate in May, so we will need to put the word out to seek new members.

G. Social Action - The African American Democratic Club of Montgomery County presents, The State of Black Montgomery, on February 22, 2014 was a success and it was standing room only. Spring is coming so please sign up for the next Adopt-A-Road Clean up for March 29, 2014.

H. Chapter Socials - For Sorors that did not receive their vase, Soror Gbolokai has their gift today. Please see her after the meeting. An upcoming event will be at Dave & Buster for bowling and a buffet dinner on March 29, 2014. The cost is expected to be around $30-$35.

I. Scholarship – There are 39 applicants and the committee will be awarding five $500 scholarships. The awardees will be announced at the April Chapter Meeting.

J. Nominations/Elections - Soror McClain sent out the Executive Board Meeting duties to the chapter. The committee will start calling Sorors in April. Elections will be held during the May Meeting. Every position is up for election and more than one Soror can run.

OLD BUSINESS

The Mardi Gras Party was held on March 1, 2014. The Gross Profit/Sales: $6,782.71, the expenses were $4,961.11, Money owed by Sorors is $370, and the profit will be $1,821.60 after all payments have been received. The top sellers were Soror Turner with 21 tickets, Soror Amos with 14 tickets, and Soror Tyson with 13 tickets.

NEW BUSINESS

A. Finer Womanhood Nominee – Soror Krystle McClain is our Finer Womanhood Honoree! We will keep you posted on honoring Soror McClain Eta Pi Zeta Style!

B. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Mu Nu Chapter request that Eta Pi Zeta participate in their Game Changer Event on March 29, 2104 at Montgomery College Germantown Campus. Omega Psi Phi would like the chapter to develop, pass out, collect an evaluation form. Omega Psi Phi also wants the chapter to provide feedback on what needs to be improved, what was like, disliked, etc.

C. There is a new health initative starting March 31, 2014, “Zetas Have Heart”. Soror McClure volunteered to be the Heart Captain. Soror Bryan said she would email Soror McClure all the details so that Sorors can register.

D. The Crabfest is scheduled for July 26, 2014 at the East County Community Center. Ticket are $45 for Adults and $25 for kids. The committee will have the flyers and tickets available at the next meeting.

E. Misc. Maryland State Conference is March 21-213, 2014. Late Registration is now $250. Boule is July 15-19, 2014 and the registration fee is $600. There will be no early registration for Boule.

F. Selling Tickets. Soror Bryan asked the chapter should we set a minimum in selling tickets because some Sorors selling a lot of tickets for events and some Sorors are selling none and she is trying to make it fair for everyone. Motion made by Soror Clark, “I move that each chapter member sell a minimum of 4 tickets, but at least purchase one ticket to the Crabfest”. Motion passes by Soror Amos.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
