Guidelines and Criteria

Applying for a FMF Scholarship

In keeping with the Professional Organization of Women’s mission of “Empowering African American Women to Learn, Lead, and Succeed”, The Professional Organization of Women (P.O.W.) established the Frankie Muse Freeman Scholarship Foundation in 2005.

Purpose

§  Provide scholarships in a number to be established annually by the Executive committee from the interest and funds raised for the Scholarship Fund.

§  Provide a vehicle by which P.O.W. may provide monetary awards, as they see fit to assist “non-traditional” women.

§  Provide a vehicle for any company, group or persons to contribute, memorial or otherwise, to sustain the scholarship fund.

Eligibility Requirements

§  Applicant must have a demonstrated financial need for tuition, school related fees and costs only

§  Applicant must be a woman 18 years or older

§  Applicant must have a GED or high school diploma

§  Applicant must enroll in accredited higher education program such as

o  2 year College/University

o  4 year College/University

o  Junior College

o  Technical, Trade or Certificate program

§  Applicant must have at least 1 (one) year remaining towards completion of program

Application Criteria

All applicants must submit the following information no later than Friday, September 26, 2014. Submit a completed application

§  Proof of High school diploma or GED

§  U.S. Citizenship

§  Drivers License or State ID

§  Proof of acceptance into a post-secondary institution

§  An essay answering the question identified within the scholarship application

Essay Requirements

§  Typed

§  1000-1500 words in length

§  Times New Roman Font Type

§  Size 12 Font

§  1 Inch Margins

§  Three letters of recommendation from two or more of the following categories:

o  Community program

o  Mentor and/or Teacher

o  Church clergy

o  Job supervisor

Selection Process

The Scholarship Committee will review all applications. The Scholarship Committee will use a point value system to assist in the determination of eligibility. P.O.W. is under no obligation to award any scholarships to any individual. Successful applicants will be notified by October 3, 2014.

Scholarship Award

Scholarship funds will be provided directly to your school of choice in four installments and can be used for tuition and applicable fees associated with your school. Each recipient must maintain a grade point average at minimum of 2.5 and provide transcripts to the Professional Organization of Women upon the completion of each semester. Recipients must allow the Professional Organization of Women to use your name and image as a scholarship recipient.

Each Scholarship recipient will be provided a mentor from P.O.W. The recipient must be willing to meet with her mentor at regular intervals to discuss the scholarship recipient’s progress. The mentor will track and report on the recipient’s progress on a quarterly basis to P.O.W.
