Essay #3/Comparison-Contrast Essay (20% of your total class grade)

Tuesday, October 5: Write a preliminary draft of Essay #3 in the computer lab during class time. Make a copy for me or save a copy to my master disk. Revise the paper as much as you can prior to bringing two copies to the Revision Workshop on Thursday.

Write a comparison/contrast essay on a topic of your choice that uses the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark as the starting point for the idea.

Here are some topics you might consider writing on:

a. Compare/contrast Indiana Jones with Belloq, the French archeologist

b. Compare/contrast Indiana Jones with Marion

c. Compare/contrast Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark with him in another role

d. Compare/contrast the quest/obsession of Indiana Jones with a quest/obsession of your own

e. Compare/contrast the critical view of Raiders of the Lost Ark with the popular view

f. Compare/contrast Raiders of the Lost Ark with one of the other movies in the series (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom)

g. Compare/contrast Raiders of the Lost Ark with a real "B" movie

The final draft of this assignment, an out-of-class paper, will be evaluated on the usual general levels: how effective your introduction is, how well you organize the entire essay and individual internal paragraphs, how well you use primary and secondary support (details) to describe your specified topic and support your thesis, and how well the overall paper is edited for grammar, mechanics, and spelling. In addition to the above criteria which are usually evaluated, make sure you include the following which are particularly important for a comparison/contrast essay: a clear purpose, a clear audience, a logical and interesting thesis, and effective use of an organizational pattern that fits your topic.

You will be given class time for both a revision workshop and an editing workshop; you need to make sure that you take these workshops quite seriously before turning in your paper for grading.

When you turn in your final draft, you need also to turn in all the drafts which are part of the revision workshop, and all the drafts which are part of the editing workshop. Not turning in all these parts to your essay packet will drop your total essay grade by 5%. Make sure your paper is double-spaced, has one-inch margins, is in a dark 10 or 12 point print, and has the following title block at the top of the right side of the paper:
