Español I: Capítulo 3B – Skits/Menu Project

«En una Soda de Costa Rica»

Part I – the skit

There must be three to four people to a group, one waiter/waitress and the others are customers. Groups will be chosen randomly.

The skit needs to make sense, be coherent and flow like a real conversation.

  • The conversation is between a server and 2-3 customers who discuss/DESCRIBE food and talk about their HEALTH and order from the menu.
  • Server takes drink and food order, then dessert order [at least one “customer” must order the dessert you bring in for the class] and then brings the check when asked [La cuenta, por favor].
  • The check may/may not be typed on a computer but must match what was ordered and the calculations in COLONES must be accurate [match menu prices].

Each member of the group must have AT LEAST 10 full lines [A line = a sentence w/a verb! hello/goodbye, yes/no, etc. DO NOT count!].

Skits must “take place” in a Costa Rican Soda during lunch/dinner time. You must use all the appropriate vocabulary and expressions from Unit 3 [both 3A and 3B].

Within your skit, besides the food vocab, there must also be used the following major verbs in the chapter. EACH of these verbs MUST be used at least TWICE:

  • beber, compartir, comer, quiero/quieres/quiere, ser, preferiranddeber.

Use the “me gusta/gustan” and “me encanta/encantan” construction at least FOUR times in the skit.

  • The verb “gustaría/gustarían” can replace “gusta/gustan” to mean would like.

For skit you will be allowed an index card/paper on which you may write YOUR LINES ONLY. The lines will be collected after your presentation. [+10 points extra credit will be added to your [individual] project grade IF you memorize your lines].

For skit you may NOT simply read lines. It MUST look like you’re having a real conversation and talking to a PERSON, not your card [eye contact is a must!!]. You cannot receive a good grade for the presentation if you are simply reading your lines.

Server’s actions must match his/her lines. [ex. Don’t serve food and then asked what the want to eat.]

A copy of your script and one menu must be turned in / shared on Google Drive by the first day of presentations.

Part II – the Menu/Restaurant scene

Menus should just be done on a computer.

Your menus should include the food/drink vocab in this unit [but you may include other things you know how to say. However, be careful of what you look up]. It must be a Lunch & Dinner menu.

Menu must include a few pictures.

You must list FIVE main food items, FIVE sides, FIVE drink items and THREE desserts for each meal.

Food items MUST BE DESCRIBED. Do not just list “potatoes”…say “tasty potatoes”.

Your menu must include prices in Colones [¢] the Costa Rican currency. The current exchange rate is about ¢500.00 = $1.00…you do the math!

Each “customer” must have a menu.

Props must be brought in or made by the group. This includes all the necessary place settings [plastic forks, spoons, paper plates, napkins, cups, etc…] as well as all the food ordered. No one should be served air!

Each group must bring in a REAL dessert from your menu to be shared by the class after your skit.

  • The dessert must be a typical Spanish/Hispanic dessert OR decorated to look so.

A copy of your script, one menu and one copy of this rubric must be turned in at the time of the skit.

Grading:

Counts as a Project grade = 200 points [100 for script, 75 for menu/preparation/props, 25 for presentation]. See rubric on back for complete grading procedures.

All skits will be performed on Thursday - Friday, April7-8, 2016

Barring any unforeseen circumstances please be present on this day or your entire group will be left waiting. IF you are absent on the day of your skit, and you are NOT the server, your lines will be read by another student.
