INSTRUCTOR

English for College Camp (EFC)

A Diversity and College Access (DCA) Pre-College Program

July 8 - July 28, 2018

POSITION SUMMARY: The EFC Instructor will provide academic ELL lessons and assessments in reading, writing and oral communication. Instructors will teach and evaluate high school students’ abilities in English. Lessons must be consistent with the philosophy and goals of the EFC program. They will also collaborate and assist the EFC Coordinator with special projects as needed, and supervise workshops and independent work time.

PAY: The salary for this 3-week position is $3000.

HOURS: The class day is from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Mornings will be direct teaching. Afternoons will be spent in one on one tutoring and directing student work time in the Computer Labs and supervising special workshops with guest speakers. Instructors must also attend 1 day of orientation in June, likely week of June 11. Instructors will be required to attend the Talent Show (tbd) and participate in the Celebration Ceremony on July 28. They are encouraged to attend the program’s recreational and social events on a volunteer basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the EFC Coordinator and/or DCA Director, the Instructor will perform the following duties:

  • Develop and teach academic ELL materials in accordance with the philosophy and goals of the program. Syllabus and book selection should be finalized by end of orientation day.
  • Administer placement tests and assign students to classes based on their current language level.
  • In the morning, teach four classes: homeroom, oral communication, reading, and writing.
  • Attend a staff meeting during the lunch hour once/week (Wednesdays).
  • In the afternoons, greet and introduce guest speakers, supervise workshops, supervise student work time in the computer labs, provide one-on-one or small group tutoring, and teach additional sessions of writing/reading/communications if needed.
  • Keep accurate attendance and performance records.
  • Provide regular student status reports to the EFC Coordinator to address concerns and/or problems.
  • Understand and comply with University plans for student safety and dealing with emergencies.
  • Attend the Talent Show and participate in the Celebration Ceremony.
  • At the end of the program, provide a written evaluation and grade for each student.
  • Provide a brief (2-3 page) written summary of your classroom and curriculum experiences; include any suggestions for improving the program.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master Degree with teaching experience
  • Prior experience teaching academic English to language learners
  • Demonstrated ability to work with high school students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of the resources and skills necessary to help students become college and career ready

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • ESL or EFL certification desired
