Standard 1: Historical Understanding: CHANGE, CONTINUITY, AND CAUSALITY-Understand change and/or continuity and cause and/or effect in history

Overview: Reading the newspaper and keeping up with current events, believe it or not, is IMPORTANT!

You will submit 3 current events total; see due dates below. Your write up should be

5 paragraphs total. Please see the format below. Your news article should be about a current

Issue in the US/Hawaii.

Format – The 4 I’s Analysis

IDEA: Briefly describe the main point of the article. Describe who, what, when, where, and why and an overview of the situation.

INSERT: Cite a specific line of text (phrase or sentence) that supports the main idea described above. (3 inserts required total). Be sure to put the insert into “quotation marks”

INTERPRET: For each “insert” briefly explain how it supports the main idea of the article. (Complete one interpret for each insert; 3 total)

INSIGHT: Explain the significance of the article in terms of its relevance to what you have learned or are currently learning in class. In addition, please briefly explain your own personal position on the topic and why (including any predictions, conclusions, or questions you might offer). This is the most important section of the assignment as it reflects your own thinking. Address the EQ:

Essential Question: How does the past affect the present?

Choosing an Article: Your article must be a current article about government or politics. Articles should be out of a credible newspaper source and must be either a news article. You may find newspaper articles online from sources such as Police beat, comics, SPORTS, celebrity gossip, articles shorter than 12 inches, etc., willNOT be accepted. If you are unsure if the article is acceptable or not, please come see the teacher as soon as possible! If you choose an unacceptable article without getting it approved, you will receive a 0 for the assignment.

Grading: This assignment will be evaluated on the following:

a. Is your analysis complete?b. Is your analysis accurate?

c. Is your analysis thoughtful? (make connections between the article to classroom learning or personal experiences)

d. Is your write up typed and properly cited?e. Is your citation properly formatted?

f. Is your article attached?
