It is a beautiful world of stories that will help you read stories while listening to the pronunciation.

Course Description:

The focus of ESL 1 is on vocabulary development, grammar and sentence structures, analysis and interpretation of texts, simple, basic academic writing and short oral presentations. This open-entry open-exit course emphasizes listening/speaking skills and reading/ writing skills.

The focus of the course is on comprehending and engaging in extended conversations related to familiar contexts, such as health, employment, and community resources. Students will be able to report basic information regarding housing (Community resources). Also, students will be able to speak over the phone with a landlord regarding an apartment for rent.

Quizzes and tests

You will have a CASAS appraisal test at the beginning of the semester and another one at the end of the semester to track your progress.

Occasional quizzes and tests based on specific instructional materials will be given. These quizzes and tests will allow the teacher to assess your progress towards acquisition of specific skill or knowledge. Tests will be announced at least one week before the test date. There will be no announcement for quizzes.

Classroom Etiquette

  • Electronic Devices: Cell phones and electronic devices must be turned off and put away during class unless otherwise directed by the instructor. Cell phones are only to be used outside the classroom. Please place them on vibrate mode, or turn them off during class.

Food and Drink are prohibited in all classrooms. Water bottles with lids/caps are the only exception.

  • Please take a break only at the time specified by the instructor.
  • Please do not hesitate to ask questions. We want you to have a very positive experience, so enjoy the class and practice your English.

Children in the classroom: Due to college rules and state laws, no one who is not enrolled in the class may attend, including children.

  • If you are a student with a disability requiring classroom accommodations, and have not contacted SSD, do so in a timely manner. SSD is located in the Student Services Annex, Room 175 or
