NEONP NOVEMBER 8, 2014 MEETING MINUTES

We had a very informative presentation concerning hypertension management by Dr. George Bescak. Discussed was a new ARB (Edarby). Also available in combination with chlorthalidone as Edarbyclor. Benefits of new drug over older ARB/diuretic therapy were presented. Presentation sponsored by Lori Betchker from Arbor Pharmaceuticals.

Presidents Report: Dodie Nelson discussed a new strategy presented at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Connected Care Meeting to only discharge patients the Nursing Homes that have a state rating to minimize hospital re-admissions and therefore improve cost containment for their facilities. Also discussed was a new niche for APRN’s to provide patient management at these nursing homes to aide in readmission prevention.

President –Elect Report: Karen Brenner discussed that the application for CNE accreditation for the April 2015 conference is almost complete and that it is her goal to have it submitted before the end of 2014. The reason for this is that as of January 2015 there will be a fee involved with the accreditation process.

Treasurer/Membership Report: Chris Suchan reported that since the last meeting there were no expenditures, no deficits, and that the budgets were set for the Transitions and Conference. Also we are in dire need of new paying members to boost our budget.

Secretary Report: Chris Armstrong had nothing to report as she was absent from the September 7th meeting due to a prior family commitment. Lucy Thomas very graciously took that meeting’s minutes and they are available on the member’s only area on the NEONP site.

Committee Reports:

-Conference brochures are at the printers presently and will need to be addressed for mailing after the January 10, 2015 meeting.

-Pat Summers suggested that we include 50 yrs of NP’s in the Brochure but as they are already at the printers it is too late. A rubber stamp was suggested to be applied at the time of addressing.

-That having Loretta Ford physically present at the Conference would be too cost prohibitive and that perhaps a taped skype interview could be played at Conference instead. Pat Summers agreed to investigate the possibility.

Website Committee: Lucy Thomas reported that the member’s only area password is npheart. Old Business:

-Legislative changes that have been approved:

-Only Psychiatric NP’s have been awarded the authority to pink slip a patient.

-That Lyme disease is now reportable d/t a Senator’s son contracting the disease and forcing legislation on the issue.

-NP’s are now legally able to pronounce a patient deceased and sign the death certificate.

-That NP’s can write an Rx for a handicap placard for 5 years, without any declared diagnosis. That recently an Rx for a placard was declined by the Ohio Board of Motor Vehicles d/t the initials APRN not being on the proscribed list of acronyms accepted as health care workers that may prescribe a placard.

-A new branch of OAAPN has opened in Medina.

-Narcotic prescriptions and the need to have OARRS reporting ability in order to prescribe.

New Business:

-Happy Holidays to all!

-See you all in 2015!
